Jury Rules Sheriff Guilty Shooting Black Man - Awards 4 cents

Yup, that's right, it's not a typo. Jury found the Sheriff culpable; and held him accountable to the tune of 4 cents.

6. The link is in the Tweet and I put this here (instead of LBN)

Because the NYT makes everyone pay to see.

I'm not helping NYT get 1 red cent

4. Considering the sheriff wasn't there, and the linked article doesn't detail

Why the jury found him responsible, I can't form an educated opinion. The cop who did shoot him, through a closed garage door, probably should have been held partially responsible, especially since only one of the two deputies fired. The victim being drunk no doubt played a part in his death as well.

The person who sent out the tweet apparently didn't read the article.

5. Booooo

The story is "found guilty" = 4 cents.

A mockery of justice set of facts - no matter how much you may try - to assuage.

20. Actually nobody was found "guilty"

It was a civil case.

Criminal cases deal in guilt.

Civil cases decide liability. And unlike a criminal court where you are either guilty or not of a charge in civil cases a jury can assign partial liability.

So it appears in this case they determined that the sheriff was only liable in a very small percentage of what happened, and that the bulk of the responsibility and liability for the mans death was his own for being extremely drunk and carrying a firearm while extremely drunk.

Civil case jury verdicts are a good bit more complicated than just “guilty/not guilty” in many cases and claiming that the Sheriff was found guilty in this case is not accurate.

9. There's no evidence the black man who was shot with no weapon in his hand played a part in

... his own death.

After all the stupid police shooting there are still people willing to blame black men and give police, who in this case shot through a freakin garage door, the benefit of the doubt !!!

FUCK !!!

11. I know....right. - The real paradigm is "Guilty when Black"

I was the only white male (weighed 145 lbs 5'10" in high school, in NYC - during desegregation.

Did not suffer 1/10th the racism that exists this day.

Not once did any minority seek to reverse punish me for years of EXTREME discrimination.

It all makes me sick.

It appears you failed to read the article as well. Or simply didn't comprehend it. I'm going with option C-- 50% of one, 50% of the other.

18. Most of us (who follow the news) are locked out of reading NYT

by the end of the 1st week of the month.

The 2 facts (of shot through door and 4 cents award) speak volumes.

16. Sounds like a deadlocked jury compromised to get a verdict

A friend of mine was on a medical malpractice jury recently that did the same thing. 11 members wanted to find the doctor not liable because the patient had completely ignored the doctors instructions for care after surgery and had not shown up for any follow up appointments after surgery, but one juror was adamant that the doctor had some blame and refused to vote he had no liability. So they came to a compromise where they awarded damages but then reduced the damages because of the plaintiffs own responsibility on her outcome for not following instructions and they awarded her $1. The lone holdout juror was happy because he just wanted to say the doctor had “some responsibility “ but the minimal damages were based on the degree to what the person was accountable.

Sounds like a similar case here, where the jury decided that the mans actions of being severely intoxicated and in possession of a firearm while severely intoxicated were the major causes of his death, and the actions of the sheriff played only a minor role, and damages were done based on that. Probably also a compromise on the jury where most felt he was to blame based on his actions but some didn’t want to rule the Sheriffs office was totally without blame.

Civil trial juries can be odd things as can their verdicts, especially in states that allow them to rule what percentage of blame different parties have.

19. Loud music warrants the death penalty in America

Being drunk in your own garage means that you want the cops to kill you.
