New Study: Hurricane Maria Killed 75 Times More Puerto Ricans Than the Government Has Admitted

(50,285 posts)If it had been this bad in Texas or Alabama or one of the other Trumphumper states, they would have gotten more resources than they could handle and Trump would still be traveling there. The sad truth is, Trump supporters are so dim they don't even recognize Puerto Ricans as Americans and they pretty much despise anyone who isn't a "true Murican." It was easy for Trump to cross Puerto Rico off the list and get back to hating Mexicans. Hurricane season starts tomorrow. Heaven help us.

(85,999 posts)...Trump pulled out manpower and resources with no regard to the devastation a new season of storms would wreak on a collapsed infrastructure.
I guess Haiti would be the model for that.

(23,123 posts)Repugs are talking about passing a bill to remove $15,000,000 in funding for social goods because they have already spent the money giving it to themselves and their donors. Cant fix Flint, can't have health care, want to steal our SS and Medicare $$, all so the ultra rich can keep their extra tens of millions of $$.

(85,999 posts)...but I keep thinking, how do you stain a turd of a presidency?
It's about recovering and rehabilitating America for the foreseeable future. I hope Trump's presidency collapses before the country does.

(5,528 posts)But I am a little confused where the Government of PR sits in this. Isn't it their responsibility to do the counts? It was patently clear from the outside that the numbers didn't add up.
Even if they were simply overwhelmed it seemed like they would have ball park ideas of numbers in the thousands.
I can't get over the question of whether they were hiding the numbers intentionally out of a misplaced sense of pride. If so, they did the people of Puerto Rico a disservice to downplay the devastation. Reality would have brought more help.

(85,999 posts)... but the governor's initial response, giving numbers in the double digits, was criticized right away and pressure on the governor lead him to commission the GWU study.
This Harvard report is the Puerto Rico govt. coming to grips, whatever their culpability.
WaPo:
The Harvard researchers reported that there are several reasons the death toll in Puerto Rico has been drastically underestimated. Every disaster-related death, they said, must be confirmed by the governments Forensic Sciences Institute, which requires that bodies go to San Juan or that a medical examiner travel to the local municipality.
As the United States prepares for its next hurricane season, it will be critical to review how disaster-related deaths will be counted, in order to mobilize an appropriate response operation and account for the fate of those affected, the authors wrote.

(5,528 posts)But it still seems like it would have been in their best interest to explain all that at the time.
Something like...
"The official death toll stands at xxx. However, the documentation to confirm official deaths is rigorous and the institutions responsible for it are severely impacted by the storm as well. It is anticipated that the official death toll will be substantially higher when properly documented."
But it seems like they were deliberately hiding behind the "official" numbers and did not want to acknowledge that it was actually worse.

(85,999 posts)...patients denied adequate care, lack of adequate medical resources overall, lack of food and water, shelter.
The governor's initial response was so absurd that it put outside groups in motion to determine the real extent of the casualties and deaths. Failure in leadership, though, certainly has a corrosive impact.

(14,582 posts)about this with a staffer. I suggested that instead of ripping off pensions of public workers to pay off Wall Street, maybe the American people would be better served if he went to Wall Street and insisted they forgive Puerto Rico's debt. After all, I said, we bailed out Wall Street to the tune of $750 BILLION back in 2008 under TARP. How the heck come they can't forgive PR's debt???
Immoral capitalist dirt bags. It's always profit over people, and I'm fed up with it because that is bullshit.
