----
Brownback chuckled and dismissed the notion that he took his new diplomatic role to help rehabilitate his reputation after his much-criticized stint as governor, which ended Jan. 31. He blamed the fall in commodity prices including oil for much of his states financial problems. He had less than two years left in his second term as governor anyway and said he felt like a lame duck.
----
But now, with the confirmation fight behind him and far from the red-state politics of Kansas, Brownback appears relaxed and eager to tackle a new challenge. He dismisses concerns that hell prioritize one religious group over another.
Religious freedom is my top priority. Every religion. Or no religion at all, he says. Youve gotta be dogged about that. This is about protecting the right. Its not about favoritism.
He also downplayed his record on gay rights, echoing Pompeo in insisting that the State Department is committed to defending the human rights and dignity of all persons.

(15,565 posts)Early on in his term as governor, he was lauded and feted at many right-wing churches who felt he was their man for president - a few even going on record as saying so, but he honestly fucked up so badly that he became toxic. He's going to use this position to hype his personal religion and get back into people's good graces. He might do some minor things, but they will be done with a wink and nod to religious conservatives, or he'll just plain out work for something unconstitutional that favors Christianity, claiming it will benefit everyone when it obviously won't.
