(14,552 posts)This is pushing the meme that is only a campaign violation. Pay a fine and move on. We are on step 5.
step 1. deny about what they did
step 2. lie about it
step 3. deflect. others did it too. What about Clinton?
Step 4. lie again
Step 5 admit and say it wasn't illegal
step 6. lather rinse and repeat.

(19,253 posts)This was a crime. I am not surprised that Guliani and/or Trump admitted to it as they probably don't have anyone working for them familiar with campaign finance law. I'm sure this is just the tip of the iceberg.

(5,995 posts)They are hoping to use the "We're new to this political stuff and just overlooked it" dodge. They think $130K is minor and hope no one looks too hard at the laundered millions that came in from the Russian via the RNC & NRA.
Johnny2X2X
(19,253 posts)Jessie Jackson Jr. did hard time for campaign finance violations.
This is not something that usually gets a slap on the wrist. $130K in illegal campaign contributions is not a small crime, politicians go to jail every year for much less.

(14,602 posts)I'd remind you that racism without doubt played a part in Jackson Jr's treatment. Had he been white, one can only look at white candidates who have been caught with campaign finance violations and see what has happened to them.
My bet is they were treated less harshly.

(59,508 posts)because the accusation is that their campaign accepted more than the per person limit or money from people not allowed to contribute. However, all money was spent on valid campaign uses. This happens in almost any large campaign - even if the campaign has best practices to prevent it. In the past, it sometimes even happened when the RNC or DNC coordinated large contributions to Senate and House campaigns.
What happened in the Jesse Jackson Jr case was money was spent on personal uses. Consider here, that the contributions were both too large and for something personal, not a valid campaign expense.
I suspect that what Guiliani was doing was to state that Trump ultimately paid this, making the President a liar, but meaning this was NOT an illegal campaign contribution. Labelling the President a liar is not something subordinates usually do, but consider that lying to the media is not a crime, where if it were unreimbursed it could be. (Here, the closest case I know of was the money given to John Edwards to help him with his mistress, where he was not sent to jail.)

(3,515 posts)if it was reported as an expense. If it wasn't reported as a business expense, then it was personal or was it part of campaign expenses?
If it was personal, from what account did Trump pay the law firm that paid Cohen? Where did the money ultimately come from?

(59,508 posts)It might get to Trump/Trump organization/Trump campaign being treated as the same thing -- which they aren't. Unless it was Trump's personal money, it would seem to be illegal.

(14,602 posts)He believes that they won't get Trump on treason even if it does now seem obvious the cheetoh is a traitor.
Rather, he says they will get him on trying to cover up these hush money payments, which were probably made illegally. In his words, "They'll bring Trump down on the sex thing."
A fitting end for an avowed 'pussy grabber' don't you think?
In fact, the image of Trump being led from the WH in cuffs is quite appealing...

Pence will be saved and he will pardon Trump just as Ford did Nixon for the good of the nation.

(14,602 posts)Everyone keeps talking about how presidents can't pardon people for state crimes, though, so we'll have to see if that throws a monkey wrench in the plan.

People have been singing this song since he came down the escalator, he isn't serious, it is just a publicity stunt, he was going to drop out going into the convention, he was going to drop out going into the general, he was going to step down after he got elected ...
People need to wrap their heads around the reality he is much more likely to have a second term than not see out this one. The ONLY way we get rid of him for sure will be the epic battle in 2020. AND, the only way he will face any criminal justice will be when he is out of office, and even at that might need democratic control of POTUS and congress to ensure the fuckwits don't step in somehow.
Final note - this thing that he will walk away with the assurance Pence will pardon him defies ANYTHING he has done, and any prior people like him.
NO meglomaniac cedes power and leaves his fate to another man ...

(3,515 posts)That's the big question. Will Democrats be united enough in 2020 to win the presidential election? Because if we are, Trump doesn't have a chance.

(11,885 posts)They've shown nothing but allowing others to do as they please with little or no consequences, so expecting them to do anything is a waste of time, because with pressure on them they won't do anything. Another reason the American people will greatly reject any Republicans running in Nov.. This will also help turn both the House and the Senate over to the Democrats to control, and renew investigations the GOP refused to do.
