http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/31/motel-6-racial-slur_n_1720762.html?1343747954Joseph Ross, a Dayton, Ohio, resident, got an unwelcome "welcome" this weekend when he checked into a Motel 6 in the nearby town of Sharonville, where he planned to attend a jazz festival.
Ross told WCPO that he switched on the television in his room only to be greeted with an on-screen racial slur: "Hello N****r!"
*snip*
On its website, the Cincinnati NAACP said that the Dayton chapter "independently called the location to ask if the Motel 6 had on their TV broadcast 'Hello N*****s.' The person who answered the phone confirmed the information was true but provided no explanation or clarity of why.

(8,556 posts)I can pretty much guarantee that this is either a hoax, or some sort of odd hack. If none of those, he turned it on public access and found some bizarre show that nobody has paid attention to until now.

(46,192 posts)uh huh. i mean, maybe it's a hoax, but to be just totally convinced it couldn't happen,
...one would have to be white.
for some reason, obvious to everyone, it's white people that can live in a country that actually legalized racism for centuries and yet be astonished that racism might actually happen a few decades later.

(69,059 posts)They list things like the pool hours, what conference rooms are being used, and the nearest place to order a pizza.
It's possible that there's a keyboard at the front desk that allows someone to simply type messages like, "The pool is closed for repairs," or "Welcome Ni**er!" whenever they see fit.

(8,556 posts)The kind you see in bathroom graffiti everywhere. I don't think it says anything about the region or Motel 6. Same thing with the 'black people leave' intercom thing at a NJ Wal-Mart a few months back. That doesn't really say anything about Wal-Mart or NJ.
Another poster brought up the possibility of corporate sabotage. While that's not the most likely scenario, it is certainly plausible. Could also be a disgruntled employee looking to damage the brand for personal reasons.

(28,464 posts)It was by far and away the nastiest Motel 6 I've ever stayed in. Not lying: there was a rat motel trap right outside my door. I stripped down the bed to make sure there were no signs of bed bugs on the sheets or mattress. It was totally skanky. This doesn't surprise me at all.

(28,464 posts)They welcome dogs so my pup and I stay in them when we travel across the country every few years to visit friends and family. Most are very well kept, some are fairly shabby, but this one in Sharonville, OH was the only one I could call truly skanky and gross.

(22,336 posts)I don't get why this would happen. Even a hotel chain owned and operated by racists wouldn't be that stupid.
you got to ask yourself qui bono? and thats where the possibility of industrial sabotage or even disgruntled employee make sense.

(69,059 posts)It did, after all, say "WELCOME N-word."
Although if that was the case, it should have said, "Welcome MY N-word," if I properly understand the way it's supposed to be used.
Either way, someone needs to be in a lot of trouble for this.

(24,853 posts)Log in to DU2, and search for an OP by me (Christmas '07 I think) describing the back and forth between my Daughter and I when she came out. Then come back and ask me if I'm against boycotting Chick-fil-A. If you don't feel like doing that, I'll make it easy for you... NO, I am not afraid of boycotting Chick-fil-A. In fact, I'm purer than most in that regard. I've been boycotting Chick-fil-A for over 51 years. How's that?
You said it seemed like I'm against boycotting. No, in general I'm not. Do I support boycotting states because of the actions of their voters? No. Something like that is just stupid. No one seems to take into account that in any boycott, people innocent of the reason for the boycott will always be adversely affected. No matter. On the other hand, would I boycott In-N-Out because their packaging contains Bible references? Some here do, but I do not. Double-doubles with grilled onions are The Bomb.
Actually, the subject line of my post was a takeoff on another DU'er who regularly demands we turn to this or that political talk show on TV, and a backhanded swipe at the way some DU'ers react to something they find objectionable.

I did this in Las Vegas when we saw how nasty the rooms were. They returned our money and we found a better room elsewhere.
