General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMichael Steele just repeated the lie, as if it were undeniable fact, that HRC didn't campaign
in PA, WI and MI.
Pennsylvania was just made up out of thin air. Michigan is a place where she spent more money than Obama in 2012 and visited 7 times. She stopped making appearances there when she had a huge lead in the polls. And Wisconsin is a state where she spent a lot of money, and had more staffers than Obama in 2012. Again, she scaled down her operations there when she had an 11 point lead. She did the same in Minnesota, which she won.
And once again they completely ignore states like Florida, North Carolina and Arizona.
All of these battle ground states moved together when Comey intervened in the election. Without the Comey intervention she would have won all of them. Steele actually claimed that Comey did not impact the outcome of the election and Hillary would have lost anyway.
It has become commonplace to suggest that it was a super close race all along, and at best Comey tipped the balance. That is as untrue as the claim that Comey didn't alter the outcome. HRC was heading towards a decisive victory and it is not a complicated evaluation to make. It is glaringly obvious.

(2,078 posts)what Comey did. The counter point side shut him down on it too. He acted based on what he thought a predicted outcome instead of following the law and protocols. Its simple as that. He did not 'let justice be done though the heavens fall', but instead, was looking out for his career.
Trump is president in large part because of his actions. No doubt.

(131,758 posts)'I said Clinton was in trouble with the voters I represent. Democrats didnt listen.
By Debbie Dingell November 10, 2016
Debbie Dingell, a Democrat, represents Michigans 12th Congressional District in the House.
I was the crazy one. I predicted that Hillary Clinton was in trouble in Michigan during the Democratic primary. I observed that Donald Trump could win the Republican nomination for president. And at Rotary clubs, local chambers of commerce, union halls and mosques, I noted that we could see a Trump presidency. Thats Debbie, its hyperbole, she is nuts.
Its now our reality , and as Americans we need to understand why. My district reflects much of this countrys diversity. Ann Arbor is a university- and start-up town. Ypsilanti is urban, and its issues mirror those of larger cities such as Detroit and Chicago. Dearborn is headquarters to Ford Motor Co. and has the largest Muslim population in the country. The Downrivers a collection of communities south of Detroit mean auto plants and manufacturing with strong union membership.
Much of the district is Democratic and those voters strongly supported Bernie Sanders in the primary. That result didnt surprise me, but it did infuriate me that Clinton and her team didnt show up until the weekend before the primary, when it suddenly became clear they had a problem. I took Bill Clinton grocery shopping that Saturday too little, way too late. They never stopped on a campus; never went to a union hall; never talked to the Arab American community. Sanders was in my district 10 times during the primary. How would any sane person not predict how this one would go? It was fixable for the general election.
From the beginning, I knew the Downrivers would support Trump both in the Republican primary and in the general. I witness the emotions and passions of their residents every day, and I believe they are what elected Trump president.'>>>

(10,501 posts)And I seem to remember that she was advised not to go to the union hall. The rage was palpable, thanks to Comey and his nonsense.
Michigan moved along with the rest of the states, like FL, NC, and AZ, in the final weeks of the race.

(3,635 posts)she won the popular vote by 2% and would've won it by 5-6% (more than enough to carry the midwest that Trump won narrowly, along with FL and possibly NC and AZ) if not for Comey's violation of the Hatch Act with 11 days to go before election day... even with the Russians and Wiklileaks doing everything they could to drag the Orange Clown across the finish line - she still would've won easily.
The betting markets had Hillary w/80% chance of winning the presidency.
The election was stolen right before our eyes; all other narratives are designed to deflect from this fact.
StevieM
(10,501 posts)And that is even after the Russians did a lot of damage in their own right. Before the bogus claim that she was given the debate questions in the primary she was up even more. BTW, the media ignored it when Donna Brazille told Tucker Carlson that she gave a heads up to Sanders and O'Malley too about certain topics being discussed, like the death penalty and the Flint water crisis.
And none of this takes into account the damage Comey did with his July press conference.

(10,501 posts)It doesn't mention that Trump actually CANCELED an event in Wisconsin in the final days of the campaign--something that was widely discussed at the time.
And it doesn't even take into account money spent on advertising, which until this campaign was considered extremely important. Than the media decided it didn't matter, because that got in the way of their anti-Hillary narrative.

(3,635 posts)due to demographics, ie whiter/older/rural. To the extent that they support Dems, it is more conservative populist types, ie Dixiecrats, the antithesis of the modern Dem party.
OH and IA are gone, imo, WI and MN also seem shaky for these reasons.
MI and PA should always go Dem due to having large metro areas that can carry the state for us.
The future for Dems is in states that have growing metropolitan areas and diversity - states like NC, AZ, GA, TX, FL ... states that are trending Dem as previously red CO, NV, VA did.
BlueWI
(1,736 posts)It's a winnable region for Democrats, including in 2016 where wins were expected in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and possibly Ohio. Democrats can't win national elections by shrinking the map. It has shrunk too much already. Even now, some of the most reliably liberal senators are from these states: Kloubuchar and Franken (pre-resignation), Baldwin, Stabenow, and others. More effort is needed to get more indrpendent and crossover votes in these areas that are near 50/50. Democrats need to do better this way to win the majority in 2018.

(131,758 posts)'DINGELL: I think that it took a while to - people I think took Michigan for granted. People didn't necessarily listen to me at first to be perfectly frank. But it wasn't just Michigan. It wouldn't have mattered if they had done some of the things that they did do in the last week which did energize bases and address the complacency.
What you saw in Michigan is what happened in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and other Midwest states, which is why we have to look at what working men and women, union workers feel about who's fighting for them, who understands their issues, who understand how they feel.'
