Maybe I'm paranoid, but could Trump be planning to mobilize the NG?

With everything going on, with the constant barrage of news and breaking news, I forget things that happened last week. But the parade that Drumpf wants - is it a way to move equipment across the country "for a parade" and have it actually a plan to declare martial law and shut down our government?

Nothing would surprise me.

1. I think you're giving him way too much credit.

Trump is too incompetent to pull off something like that. I think he just wants a big military parade for his own self-glorification.

corrupt the US on his behalf so long as collusion cannot easily be proved? Sure. But armies and missiles and coups can be proved.

4. The military hates the idea for a million reasons.

I wouldn't be surprised if they tuned their tanks, etc on the W House. Maybe a milktary coup?

5. You're assuming he actually knows what the Natioinal Guard (I'm guessing that's what you mean by NG)

actually is, and whether or not he can mobilize it. A huge assumption, given his ignorance about almost everything.

6. I heard the same scare stories about George W. Bush when he was in office.

Just as ridiculous now as they were then.

12. Perhaps More Ridiculous

At least 45 was in the ANG, which means he didn't avoid service entirely. The military guys had to respect that more than a guy who got multiple deferments because of an "owwie". So, this might be even be less likely than with 45. And by less i mean that both were essentially zero.

7. For now, I'm still assuming that many people, who do not share my political views,

would remain sufficiently committed to American democracy to resist any such move, if it occurred

By this, I mean that it is my expectation that military personnel can, when necessary, exhibit the backbone to resist unlawful orders; and that the courts will continue to take the view that martial law does not apply where the ordinary mechanisms of procedure remain practicably applicable; and that the general public takes a dim view of would-be dictators

The US is a large and complicated country: it will not easily lend itself to a sudden centralization of power -- far too much cooperation by far too many people is required

8. You'd need to use units like the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions for that.

Even then, a coup is essentially impossible, since the governors of the various states would mobilize the National Guard in their states, which they command. They would refuse to federalize the National Guard, which is the procedure for placing the NG under US Army command, instead of state governor command.

16. States cant refuse to Federalize the NG when the President orders it

During the battle for integration of the schools in Little Rock Eisenhower actually federalized the entire Arkansas National Guard in its entirety just to remove the ability to use them from Governor Fabus. He never ordered them to service, just federalized them to assume control.

18. I can't imagine Jerry Brown allowing the CA NG to be federalized for the purposes of a coup.

Just like I can't imagine the CA NG refusing to be federalized for the purposes of secession.

9. Team Trump is woefully unprepared for ANYTHING. There is ZERO coordination on anything.

Not to say there aren’t some serious existential threats posed by this (mis)administration— there are. But those are rooted in their ignorance of— or disregard for— the rule of law.

I share your “nothing would surprise me” feeling, but I’d add an exception to that apprehension: it cannot be anything requiring precision, planning, logistics, communications, execution, firm decision-making, and building consensus.

13. No, for many reasons

The largest is that first and foremost the military wouldn’t go along with it.

While the military, and the officer corps even more so, skews more conservative they are also much more decimated to ideals than party.

And more than anything, dedicated to upholding the Constitution.

Him trying to call off elections or suspend the Constitution would result in the military not participating in that but, if anything, shouting that shit down in a hurry.

People seem to think the military is this unthinking, robotic monolith that will do whatever they are told without question. That is far from the truth.
