https://www.washingtonian.com/2018/03/05/why-its-hard-for-conservatives-to-date-in-dc-right-now/Washington DC has the most singles actively dating and using dating apps, according to a recent Time Out ranking, so its not surprising that political standoffs would take place in packed bars and Bumble conversations.
...
A lot of times youll connect with someone [on an app] and theyll Google you, find out you worked for Trumps campaign, and then its pretty much all downhill from there, says a Trump Administration official.
...
Working for a right-wing publication is such an obstacle to dating in DC, he doesnt put his employer on any dating apps and avoids talking about it until meeting someone face-to-face, he says.
The policies and these things that are attached to the right whether or not youre a supporter of Trump have been pre-supposed on you, and its like a black mark,
...
He once brought a woman back to his place, and while checking out his bookshelf, she noticed some books by conservative thinkers, he says. She was like, Oh no. First question: Did you vote for Trump?, the reporter says. He told her no, but that he was conservative. She was like I have to get out of here. I cant see you, and left.
...
We had a really nice time, but at the end of the date, he told me he didnt believe in global warming, she says. I started laughing, because Im from Colorado and didnt realize people actually didnt believe in global warming. But he was serious.
...
I feel like they look at me and are like, heres a tall white dude with brown hair wearing loafers, and he probably has a picture of Reagan and the NRA in his bedroom or something, says one of the reporters from the conservative media company. I just think they have a very hyperbolic view of what a conservative is.

These dudes are right!!! Liberal women are unfairly thinking of them as Trump-supporters, just for being Republican!!!
Not every Republican is a Trumper!
Some are granny-starvers!
Some think that a fetus has more human rights than the mother!
Some value the right to own guns higher than the right to live without fear in a peaceful society!
Some think that the Bible trumps your schoolbook!
Some think that colored people are inherently inferior to white people!
NOT EVERY REPUBLICAN IS A TRUMPER!!!

(58,785 posts)Moderate cons choose each other, strong cons... etcetera. Studies show basic personality type compatibility is a stronger factor in choosing than the background factors, socioeconomic level, education, religion, etc. Huge factor in divorce also.
What's different here of course is heightened awareness, and heightened aversion. Liberals are alert and backing away on the first good clue, instead of as in the past only realizing that this isn't going to be the one by the third date or month.
But I'm sure a lot of conservatives are also. Just my speculation, but conservatives might always have tended to somewhat be less inclined to accept differences and give the relationship more time than liberals.

(6,916 posts)As someone who was once conservative and then went to live in a city and realized conservative ideas were mostly created by billionaires who wanted to cut their own taxes I understand why no one wants to date them.
You have Washington DC, a highly educated, thoughtful place with a ton of smart people who think really hard about policy and law and science. And then this president wins and a bunch of brainwashed conservatives get parachuted into the city. Their right wing media tells them their ideas are ok and should be given equal time, but educated people know that their ideas are bunk and people holding those ideas are foolish. Dating a foolish person is no fun. Conservatives only do well inside their own billionaire funded safe spaces.

(9,527 posts)As evidenced by voting patterns, far more women identify as Democrats. So there are more Republican men than Republican women. That's probably even more true among younger people considering the demographic also leans heavily Democratic and that it's my impression that many of the younger male Republicans tend to fit into the stereotype of a bro (I don't mean that in the sense of Berniebro) libertarian, constantly trolling for the lols and complaining about SJWs that is at odds with where women in general are in the era of MeToo and pussy hats and such.
I certainly wouldn't want to have to go explain to a potential date why I was okay with the party of "legitimate rape", "grab em by the pussy", "sure I'll vote for Roy Moore" etc but that I wasn't a threat. People often make judgments based on stand-in information. In this case, women seem to be saying if you're okay with a guy who brags about committing sexual assault, that they aren't interested in trusting that you're different.

If their behavior and expressed beliefs expose them as troglodytes, well, then, that's THEIR bed that THEY'VE made, and it's THEIR problem (that it's suggested here that they have no intention of doing anything about it like maybe OPENING THEIR MINDS AND CHANGING SOME OF THEIR VIEWS), and it's just too damn bad for them if that means they can't get a date.

(11,175 posts)I've learned from reading William F. Buckley, Jr. (Side note: His book on his mayoral campaign, The Unmaking of a Mayor, is still worth reading as an in-depth account of a particular campaign. It has some conservative ideology (of course) but it's mostly a narrative that's both entertaining and informative.)
Getting back to this thread: What would Buckley think of today's Republicans? Going further afield, what would be the opinion of conservative thinkers like Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek?
The vanishing breed of thoughtful conservatives might well have held their noses and voted for Trump in November, because he was closer to them on policy issues, but he would not have been their first choice in the primaries.

I am conservative (note: not "A" conservative as defined in the dictionary of Republicanese).
I am married to my first and only wife, with whom I've been for 44 years, work for the same company I joined 43 years ago, have no debts, am risk-averse, do no addictive drugs, not even nicotine, religion or alcohol, helped my wife raise our two children who are now out in the world earning their own living, and I adhere to philosophies closer to the 18th century Jefferson than the 20th century Ayn Rand.
Note that I am also against liberalization of laws permitting gun ownership, against restricting a woman's right to determine what happens with her own body, against all attempts to water down or eliminate Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Planned Parenthood. I am FOR equal rights for all citizens, FOR quick assimilation of (and fair treatment for) immigrants, and FOR increasing the quality of schools and the access to them for people who can't afford them.
So, does make me a liberal? A "libbrul?" I don't care, A label is what it is in the eyes of the beholder.
Just call me a Democrat.
If women run in the other direction when a guy says he's "a" conservative, it's not because he's conservative in nature. It's because he's in all likelihood a Republican asshole, and not a person who is likely to treat a woman with respect and kindness if she holds different beliefs. It's not because Democratic or liberal women are intolerant or snobs. It's more likely because they have a healthy sense of self-preservation.

Paid off the house when i was 38. I'm 61 now. Never "moved up town". Don't have a Mercedes or a Porsch. (OK, i've got a crap load of guitars, but bought those with band money.)
Saved and saved and retiring at end of year because we avoided shiny baubles as much as we could.

(54,369 posts)I don't begrudge anyone else's taste for it, I just don't choose to drink it myself. I take a very "liberal" attitude on the subject, one might say. Like abortion: I would never force anyone to do it, and I would never forbid anyone from doing it.
As for guitars, I'm the same way. Back in 1977, I sought out and befriended an immigrant violin maker from Serbia who had a talent for building incredible 12 string guitars. Over the years, I had him make me several of them, all different (some cutaway, some not, one mahogany, one with a longer neck for low tunings, etc etc). He passed away 2 years ago, and now those things are irreplaceable. I also have one or two others that sound differently. Two are ca. 1965 Guild 212XL that sound similar (and like no others). I keep one here in Germany and one in Dallas so I never have to risk traveling transatlantic with them any more.
PS--come to think of it, I paid off my house at 38, too. GMTA! We both need to realize, though, that only a tiny minority of us manage to do that. A lucky break and some serious discipline came into play there.

For foreign punctuation, go to your start menu, then Programs, then Accessories, then Character Map. Or else just put character map into search. Select what you want to select, then hit copy, then control+V to paste.
Boo was the nicest guy you could ever want to meet. Never learned English to save his life, but just a prince of an old world soul. He never figured out for decades that he could make money being the best at what he did. He said he wanted $2800 to build me one of his amazing 12 string guitars from scratch. Told me it would take about 9 months, and cost him about $2000 for the materials. I told him, Boo, you can't possibly make a living charging essentially $100 a month to build the best guitars in the world. He always replied he was scared that if he charged more, no one would buy his instruments. I assured him they would. Decades later, when he had retired for what must have been the tenth time, he called me up, thoroughly amazed, saying someone had offered him $10,000 to build him a guitar. I reminded him I had told him that years ago, and he admitted he should have listened. He died poor--a poor legendary genius.

It's a place where everyone has all their basic needs taken care of and are free to do the work they came here to do, unencumbered. It's a place where storytellers and musicians and caregivers of all types are just as highly valued as those who invent fantastic machines and build skyscrapers. And it's a place where people of all ages and physical capabilities are valued and those who become elders have a special, honored place in society -- as in Native American cultures.

(54,369 posts)During the big final dinner, speeches were made with recognitions for outstanding work, and suddenly Boo was told by the other people at his table to stand up. He told me, he refused at first, saying, "Why I should stand up? Everybody else sitting down!" The people at his table told him he had just been named the best living maker of 12 string guitars. "OK, for that I stand up." His English was so poor, he had no idea what the man at the podium had been saying.
I used to imitate his voice to my wife, and she used to give me a hard time for exaggerating his accent. She has never lived in the USA except for an almost-year in 1978, and told me NOBODY who has lived in the USA for 40 years straight talks like that. Then, one time when we were on vacation in the States, I got a small answering machine for the phone, because none had been provided. Boo called and left a message about something or other. My wife humbly apologized after listening to it. Boo's genius and talents did not, alas, extend to linguistic ability.

(1,639 posts)Of why a Conservative man would want to date a Liberal woman. Afterall, they know that we are all lesbians and feminazis who hate children so much that we grab women off the streets to force them to have abortions.
Interestingly, a while back I read an article--in a RW publication--which proclaimed that Conservative/Republican women were so much better looking than Liberal/Democrat women because--unlike the harpies on the left--Conservative women enjoyed being women rather than desparaging their femininity.
The article was, of course, accompanied with photos of some lovely RW women and not-particularly-glamourous Liberals. Two can play that game though, and I'm sure that someone could cobble together a collection of photos showing matronly RW women juxtaposed with some hot Liberals.
And these whiners should remember that a pleasant-looking, accomplished person with intelligence and grit was dismissed by their head honcho as a "nasty women"--which is now seen as a badge of honor to any woman with ambitions beyond being a breeding vessel.
Final note: One very attractive Republican woman is Bo Derek. She hooked up with her future husband, John Derek, when she was 16 years old and he was married. Hubby made a lot of movies featuring his wife's beautiful body, because Republicans are all about wholesome values.
An article from years ago claimed that Bo Derek's Republican status was why her career never burned so bright in Hollywood. I guess it never occurred to anybody that her abysmal acting might have been the real cause of her stalled career. But, she did look good naked.
Hell, I love men, especially with beards, which makes them even more masculine, but I could see myself "doing" a young Bo Derek!

(28,789 posts)my father was a democrat and my mother was a republican and they were able to work it out. but it's all so tribal now. i'm a liberal, why would i want to get involved with a man who thinks liberal is a dirty word? on the flip side, i don't even get how anyone can be a republican anymore. so, yeah. bad enough that i have to work with and engage in commerce with these people. hell, i haven't even talked to my own brother since the 2016 election. i'm afraid our relationship will suffer a permanent break. it's all very sad, and it's republicans' fault, because they don't care about people, as your post expresses very well.

If they support the GOP or believe and/or support the garbage that they represent they are immediately OUT.
What kind of conversations could you have? Why would I want to be with someone who's views are so polar opposite of what I believe to be right and just? I actually give them a chance to try to defend or even explain their beliefs and it always -always comes back to the black hole that is the soul of that party. In my opinion the GOP has been infected with a cancer and is being eaten up.
Nope, not interested AT ALL.
oh, and i've looked around the dating sites just to see who is out there in my area (dating apps are the new happy hour) - they have so many conservatives it is amazing. I would say 80/20 either conservative or "independent".
I want someone who looks FORWARD and wants to heal the things that are wrong in life right now; someone who is positive and passionate about making things better, taking care of our earth, and all the things that matter to me (and to most of us in America - we need to remember that we are the majority!!!)

(46,039 posts)He had voted for Reagan before I met him, but he seemed pretty reasonable. Back then, there were still Republicans you could talk to. As time went by, he became at least as liberal as me. He died a while back, but I still have his Democratic registration card.
These days, if a man called himself a "conservative," I'd be out the door in a flash.

One thing I've noticed is that conservative men LOVE to control people.

(37,648 posts)Liberal women are perceived as stronger, I think, since they're likely to be feminist and such. But they're also perceived as "looser," I think. And let's face it, liberals are just more FUN!!!!!

(9,265 posts)Is a recently divorced guy and fitness enthusiast. Looking to date a fellow fitness-enthusiast woman on dating sites devoted to this interest. He's also a Republican.
He loves to tell us all about his dating adventures. He recently met someone on the site who apparently met all his criteria. Said he had a great time on their first date and couldn't wait to see her again. On the second date she found out he was a Republican and told him she was not interested, thank you.
He was genuinely floored that someone would reject him because of politics. Hello? After he left the room my co-workers all agreed, if we were dating the guy being a Republican would be a complete deal breaker.

(11,561 posts)Given the current GOP agenda, they have become the party of "women are second-class citizens." (Or as a good Dem friend has long said, "the keep 'em pregnant, poor, and grateful party." Most self-respecting women know better and don't care to waste their time on a modern-day neanderthal. Why would they?

(2,217 posts)The conservative view denies women's rights and wants to reduce the few they have. If a woman wants ownership then a conservative would be fine. If a woman wants a companion, then a conservative is not really an option.
There isn't really a halfway or cooperative stance here. Republicans have moved so far into their rabbit hole that they will only see reason when it might give immediate profit to them.

(521 posts)These "conservatives" are looking for dates in the DC area. But most desirable women in the DC area have some political savvy and most have jobs either in the government or related to government contracts. Since conservatives have simplistic political notions - mostly guided by 18th century slogans or modern-day tweets, and since they also want to reduce government jobs and contracts, the women quickly identify them as toxic and incompatible.
These conservatives would do much better far from DC, where politics and government-related employment is not a prime concern, also where college-educated men are considered rare and desirable.
