(51,590 posts)Mental illness is all over the world but the US has 44% of the guns and only 4.5% of the population. And 99% of the gun violence that is committed is done by males. THAT IS THE PROBLEM! It is OUR problem, our culture and our society that needs to be addressed!
Yes, mental illness, background checks, the availability of guns, etc. They all need to be addressed but no one is addressing the real common factor..... testosterone and America. That combination is the problem.

(16,177 posts)Positive role models of masculinity?
Reduction in negative messaging in movies and TV?
Anger management classes in elementary school?
Individual family situations that provide the right environment are all well and good, but there are so many people I know whose teen boys seem to go through a long period from 15 to 25 of hopelessness, confusion, anger, intensely negative world views, etc. its like there is nothing challenging and constructive that engages them, gives them a sense of purpose and a feeling of being needed.
Individuals may find there way, but there is a societal background level of what I would describe as blackness waiting to suck them in.. or an absence of meaningful group purpose, perhaps?
For many, the school experience seems designed to crush them into dust.
What does it mean to be a man? Some cultures have answers for that question that at least serve as a starting point.
I would also add..for those who say better parenting, that there is nothing more frightening than investing 15 years of your best effort to raise a child to be sensitive, responsible, educated only to find them sucked in to a dark invisible world that rejects anything light or positive. In mythological terms, Hades may capture our daughter Persephone for a season, but captures our sons for a decade. Friends tell me their boys turned normal again at 25.
I picture Norwegian youths out skiing and backpacking in Europe or Native American youths having their spirit quests. Are we lacking in rituals, group identities, economic opportunities / paths, or cultural messaging?

(51,590 posts)from all the angles, it isn't one or the other. This has been going on for at least 100 years (movies, the media is also going to have to step up). It was a long time in the making and we can't afford another 100 years to undo what is now ingrained in our culture, but it has to start sometime and we can't wish it away or pray it will get better or ignore it entirely. Families, religions, media, legislation, etc. have to change the gun culture and be serious about it.

(51,550 posts)I of course do not believe Shitler so I have no expectations that he will carry through on anything he said today. I wish he would, but I know he won't. Today's gun control dog and pony show was so transparently just that. Anyone who watched his DACA dog and pony show should know better by now.

But, I think it was Joe Manchin, who said.. paraphrasing that trump could do it better than President Obama.. because they know he's not going to take their guns away.
manchin is underestimating the power of Decades of NRA Brainwashing
