Why can't we form a counter organiztion of American People that want legitimate gun reform. Raise membership money to equal or surpass that of the NRA and use that money to fund our Congress (Senate & House) to legislate gun reform. If they don't work with such an organization - use that money to primary them - kick them out of Congress - and vote in those men/women that will support gun reform. We can grade all of Congress - just like the NRA does - as to their level of support of gun reform.
Play the NRA's game on their playing field - and beat them at their own game.

(25,294 posts)We would have a product too.
Freedom to live without fear of being killed by one of the NRA's guns.

(34,124 posts)It is that their product generates the money needed to advocate for their product.
No one is paying money (that can be siphoned off for lobbying efforts) for freedom to live without fear of being killed by one of NRA's guns.

(10,437 posts)a new board of directors with new direction of the NRA back to being the advocate of the sportsmen, not the gun industry.

(11,119 posts)And what would the NRA do with my $ every year until we take them over?

(25,294 posts)particularly if we weren't able to get the membership to the point that we could vote in a new board of directors. The NRA has such a bad reputation to many people - it might be hard for them to even consider joining and we might fall short.
I still favor a new and counter org - that we know will use our members money for the right reasons.

(11,305 posts)Most are suggesting a new organization. Members can't change anything in the NRA. It's big money donors running that place. Gun owners don't want kids killed. Gun manufacturers don't give a fuck and it's them and Russia where the big money comes from. Lapier makes over 5 million dollars a year as CEOs. That doesn't come from members dues.

(25,294 posts)I just did and have some reservations about it. There is no information as to who are the founders of this org. No names. I see - Subscribe Now - but when you click on it - at least for me - there were just two - fill in the blank boxes. No membership fee - or donate here.
I guess with respect to all the Russian interference we're beginning to learn about - I'm suspect of everything I see on the internet now. I've never heard of this org before.
This might be a legitimate org but by visiting their site - it didn't give me a lot of confidence.
The org I proposed in my OP - needs to be backed by some named and respected individuals. Perhaps even some Dem Senator(s) or House Member(s) or a group of parents/significant others that may have lost someone to gun(s). That's the caliber of people that need to be founders and board members.
If such a proposed org like I'm suggesting be formed - it needs to be fully marketed to the American People - to provide the confidence that any money donated will be used for the intended purposes for gun reform. It will need to develop a good reputation.
I think this is a timely suggestion - but I'm open to learning about any organization that might already be established that we can get behind.

(13,225 posts)I agree, not a lot of info, but as far as I can tell, there is not much else out there.
Sandyhook Promise is about the only other organization out there that I know of. It breaks my heart that the parents of THAT school shooting have had so little national impact.

(61,710 posts)I don't think they are financially powerful enough because of the splits. They were started in the aftermath to mass shootings.
I've donated to Mark Kelly's and Gabby Giffords' group, and I've donated to Mark (?) Barden's group that emerged after Newtown/Sandy Hook. I wish they were pooled into one well-funded, powerful group.

(25,294 posts)contact them and suggest they come together under one umbrella. There is power in numbers. If that can be achieved - then the umbrella group must market the hell out of it - to get their mission, message and name out there.
The NRA is counting on these counter groups to be fragmented.
