If these shootings are going to continue (and they will), we need to find ways to maximize survivability,
It is my understanding that the suspect pulled the fire alarm prior to shooting. Apparently it was a way for him to get the students out of the classrooms and into the halls.
I don't understand why we don't have a special alarm just like the fire alarm but with a radically different sound. This alarm would tell everyone on campus instantly that there is an active shooter in the area. It could sound like the horn that goes off when a submarine is about to dive. It could be anything. An alarm of this kind would allow teachers and staff to immediately lock down and hold in place.
On a related note...
Sandy Hook effected me in ways that I can not describe. The image of all those first graders being shot execution style is one that I will not soon forget.
If you recall, a poll was taken soon after that tragedy where an overwhelming percentage (90+%) of Americans were in favor of extended background checks. But nothing happened.
Do you think anything will happen legislatively to address this issue? Don't count on it.

(2,404 posts)However, the Active Shooter Alarm could only be set off by a faculty or staff person. Hopefully that would prevent both being pulled.

(51,096 posts)hall.
I'm not trying to shoot down the idea. I work in schools. Maybe the active shooter alarm cuts off the fire alarm.
Ugh. I can't believe we need to be thinking about these things.

(7,540 posts)Someone who has seen the shooter and survived would need the presence of mind and opportunity to pull that alarm.

I completely disagree.
Less guns, harder to get is the solution that works in every other nation on the planet.

(2,404 posts)The active shooter could set off a small nuclear weapon and flatten the entire school.
Geeze...I'm just trying to offer a suggestion that would save lives.
What's wrong with this place?

(2,404 posts)Here I'm suggesting something that would save lives, etc. and I'm catching crap.
I never said that this alarm would take the place of eliminating weapons as a way to solve a problem.
Geeze.

(54,106 posts)I teach at a school, and we have a system for a dangerous intruder drill. It's not a special type of alarm. I'm not sure how a separate alarm for a dangerous person would help in a situation like that.
In all the training we've had we've just been told the smartest thing to do is lock the door and stay away from the window. Yes, I know, pretty ridiculous. But we do have armed peace officers on campus
