I saw the movie preview and it seems to be phony BS to me.

She kept adding to the house because she believed that she would die if the house was ever finished IIRC. Also she felt haunted by all those killed by a Winchester rifle. The house is not haunted but is a curiosity. Steps leading to nowhere, doors opening to nothing, very low ceilings etc.
