I'd love to know what the artist had to say about the Michelle portrait. Certainly Wiley's remarks were very important in that he explained the flora. (Check other posts for that).

I can't remember well because I am old but she did say the dress reminded her of Mondrian.

3. I wondered about that. "Mondrian" didn't pop up in my brain.... but that's who was lurking.

That suggests that Michelle chose the dress. I'll go watch the video.

4. A portrait for admirers

Not sure I understood everything the artist was saying, but if I understood correctly, it was a painting to communicate to and be appealing to people who knew and admired Mrs. Obama. Not sure I'd agree that this is the core purpose of portraiture.

I didn't have time to pose, so I asked Bill Clinton to sub for me. It turned out OK, but
it ended up looking a lot more like him than like me. Oh, well...........
