I was married to a Republican...

There are worse things.

Lots of folks here at DU are close with people who see life from a completely different POV.

Group hug to all who work to weather the storm... with love.

Not a Trump voting Republican, but a Republican.

It can be challenging for sure. Lots of heated arguments. Still though, our marriage has lasted longer than many of my friends who thought they had married their soul mates.

I have a Republican father. It's not a "completely different POV". He believes flat out falsehoods. #1 is that Obama is Muslim. He's been brainwashed.

24. Mrs. Aristus still calls herself a Republican, but openly declares her intent to vote only for

Democrats until Trump is out of office, or the GOP otherwise reverts to its pre-Goldwater incarnation. So, either four years, or never.

Long-time DU-ers will recall my years-long effort to convince her of the GOP's fecklessness. An effort that yielded gold in 2008 when McCain, whom my wife admires, nominated Sarah Palin as his VP candidate. After a long, loud, and largely unprintable tirade against McCain, Palin, and the GOP, she voted for Obama/Biden. She spent the next eight years expressing admiration for Barack Obama, Michelle, and their two wonderful daughters. She voted Obama/Biden again in 2012 without a qualm.

After Trump slithered into the White House, she was plunged into a depression that she still hasn't fully recovered from.

her husband is a Trumpster. She told him that she made a big mistake voting for Trump. What does her husband of 27 years, do? He filed for divorce! She said his explanation for his divorcing is he could not be married to someone who didn't support Trump! I think there is more to this but you never know?

29. My older gay brother was a Republican.

I say “was,” as he is very much still with us, and he’s transforming. My parents were Eisenhower Republicans (my mom voted for JFK in ‘60), and he just followed along, I guess. Being the youngest, and the “black sheep,” I registered Democratic at 21 (no 18-year-old vote for my vintage) and never looked back.

His partner is a Democrat, and over the years, my brother is softening. Last year, his partner revealed to me secretly that my brother actually wrote in “Bernie Sanders” on his ballot in the GE (we’re in California, so his vote did no damage to Hillary).

I strongly suspect that he’ll be voting for Democrats from here on in. If you knew how STUBBORN my brother is, you’d know that his transformation falls into the “near-miracle” category.

Screw Trump’s teabagging neo-Confederate base, they are as unreachable as rocks. It’s the centrist Republicans that Democrats should appeal to— they do exist, and they are fed up.

But now Republicans and their voters are file, hate-filled assholes. Especially if they voted for that piece of filth Trump. It exposes them for who they really are.

When someone shows you who they really are (voting for Trump), believe them.
