In his new report, America For Sale: A Report on Billionaires Buying the 2012 Election, Sen. Bernie Sanders named names and called out the billionaires who using Citizens United to buy our democracy.
In front of a Senate panel today, Sen. Bernie Sanders outed the 26 billionaires who are members of 23 billionaire families that are using Citizens United to buy elections. Sen. Sanders estimated that these 26 billionaires are the tip of the iceberg. My guess is that number is really much greater because many of these contributions are made in secret. In other words, not content to own our economy, the 1 percent want to own our government as well.
Sanders explained how the Supreme Courts Citizens United decision put the government up for sale, What the Supreme Court did in Citizens United is to say to these same billionaires and the corporations they control: You own and control the economy, you own Wall Street, you own the coal companies, you own the oil companies. Now, for a very small percentage of your wealth, were going to give you the opportunity to own the United States government.
Sen. Sanders also did the last thing the billionaires wanted. He called them out by name.

With his report today, Sen. Sanders has made it more difficult for thieves of liberty to keep operating in the night. We now have a list of names and we know what they are trying to do to our government. Sen. Sanders is one of the few federally elected officials who has the courage to talk about these people in public.
Most of the members of the House and Senate are too afraid to speak of, much less take on, the billionaires. Even those decent members of Congress who might speak out against them have been terrified into silence by threats of multimillion dollar negative ad buys that will run against the incumbent back home.
Bernie Sanders is displaying a brand of political courage that is sorely lacking in American politics today, and he needs you to stand with him to protect our liberties, our freedoms, and to battle to return the government back to the American people.

(826 posts)a thought for a long time: today's billionaires are ancient Rome's Caesars. If you think about the corruption and excesses written about in the histories the upper 1% of Romans thought of themselves as superior and more entitled than those around them. There had been constraints in the early Republic but as Rome grew richer from all its conquests the booty really went to the Patricians at the top. Is that where we are headed? I hope not.

We have read your "Declaration of Independence" with great interest. Certainly, it represents a considerable undertaking, and many of your statements do merit serious consideration. Unfortunately, the Declaration as a whole fails to meet recently adopted specifications for proposals to the Crown, so we must return the document to you for further refinement. The questions which follow might assist you in your process of revision.
In your opening paragraph you use the phrase "the Laws of Nature and Nature's God." What are these laws? In what way are they the criteria on which you base your central arguments? Please document with citations from the recent literature.
In the same paragraph you refer to the "opinions of mankind." Whose polling data are you using? Without specific evidence, it seems to us, the "opinions of mankind" are a matter of opinion.
You hold certain truths to be "self-evident." Could you please elaborate. If they are as evident as you claim, then it should not be difficult for you to locate the appropriate supporting statistics.
"Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" seem to be the goals of your proposal. These are not measurable goals. If you were to say that "among these is the ability to sustain an average life expectancy in six of the 13 colonies of at least 55 years, and to enable all newspapers in the colonies to print news without outside interference, and to raise the average income of the colonists by 10 percent in the next 10 years," these would be measurable goals. Please clarify.
You state that "whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute a new Government. ..." Have you weighed this assertion against all the alternatives? Or is it predicated solely on the baser instincts?
Your description of the existing situation is quite extensive. Such a long list of grievances should precede the statement of goals, not follow it.
Your strategy for achieving your goal is not developed at all. You state that the colonies "ought to be Free and Independent States," and that they are "Absolved from All Allegiance to the British Crown." Who or what must change to achieve this objective? In what way must they change? What resistance must you overcome to achieve the change? What specific steps will you take to overcome the resistance? How long will it take? We have found that a little foresight in these areas helps to prevent careless errors later on.
Who among the list of signatories will be responsible for implementing your strategy? Who conceived it? Who provided the theoretical research? Who will constitute the advisory committee? Please submit an organization chart.
You must include an evaluation design. We have been requiring this since Queen Anne's War.
What impact will your program have? Your failure to include any assessment of this inspires little confidence in the long-range prospects of your undertaking.
Please submit a PERT diagram, an activity chart, and an itemized budget.
We hope that these comments prove useful in revising your "Declaration of Independence."

The Republicans are BLATANTLY ignoring any constituency. They do not need one, as demonstrated in the Wisconsin recall, and most other elections in this country anymore. It is already enough for a politician simply to know that their opponent will be pummeled by as much money as is necessary provided by their benefactors. ==> Elections are meaningless.
And, you are right. Where are most people going to obtain any subsistence (a job in most people's cases), except from those who own almost everything in this country? Of course they are beholden. ==> Protests by working people are meaningless.
They got us by the short hairs. And they also believe there are WAY TOO MANY OF US. About 6.5 (or so) Billion too many. Sure wouldn't be a lot of resource issues if there were only a hundred million or so serfs running around.
However, we have them also. They do still need us to make the machine function. Computers and machines alone are still not enough (yet). We can stop it all at any time.
Just remember, it will be ugly as hell, and that is nothing compared to what they will then unleash. Mass murder, genocide, starvation with abandon, we have seen it all already in the twentieth century (and before). The system is perfectly capable of, and quite likely to, ramp it up even more.

Everytime I see Mittens in NH, I think about how hated Richard Dryfuss was in "What About Bob". It would be easy to make the subhuman skidmarks miserable.
And it would be harder to bring in SWAT teams of pork to beat them up.
Get a boat & put 10,000 watt sound system on it & park 1/4 mile from RMoneys dock & let it rock.......
There is a lot of ez ways to make them uncomfortable & more.

(15,324 posts)Are there wealthy Democrats? Sure, but one of the HUGE differences is that they don't seem to be giving money to get policies that benefit themselves.
When George Clooney donates money, he's not asking that we strip Unions of all rights so we can pay shit-wages to the Middle Class.
When Steve Ratner donates money, he's not asking that we dismantle Social Security, Medicare and the Social Safety Net so that he can pocket an extra $250K in tax-cuts annually.
When the Kennedy family donates money, they aren't asking that we completely deregulate business so that they can "strip-mine" pristine wilderness, or build a FUCKING Nuclear Waste dump in Texas.
Don't just look at who's giving the money....look at what they stand to gain in return.
That's a big difference...and, as far as the money goes? It's not even close. Repubs are getting money from the top 1% at least at a 100 to 1 ratio.
They're not giving at that ratio to Repukes because they want to "save the Middle Class and the Working Poor".

Lose big at Adelsons Macau casino, and he sends the money to Washington. Adelson is also trying to buy immunity from federal prosecution, because he paid out illegal bribes to foreign officials to get his casinos built.
2. The Koch Brothers: trying to buy more corporate welfare. This family, which got its start drilling oil for Stalin in Communist USSR sees no reason that it cannot get the USA to support it in the lifestyle to which it has grown accustomed. The cut down government owned trees using government built roads in order to create product for Georgia-Pacific and Dixie Cup. They graze their cattle on federal land for free. And they were paid a ton of money by W. to stockpile oil in the strategic oil reserve. They are buying the right to continue to manipulate oil prices for short term gain----and long term disaster for the U.S. manufacturing, transportation , travel and retail sectors.
3. Jim Walton wants Wal-Mart to be the ONLY store in townand the only employer, too. He doesnt want to have to pay overtime or provide benefits. And he will do anything to keep the unions out.
4. Harold Simmons runs something euphemistically called NL---for National Lead. He does not see why he has to dip into his own pocket to pay to clean up Superfund sites around the country. What is a little lead going to do to your baby?
5. Peter Thiel thinks that democracy went downhill when women were given the right to vote. He is a hedge fund manager and a venture capitalist. Enough said.
6. Jerrold Perenchio owns Univision, the largest Spanish language channel in the country. He lobbied heavily against an education bill in California designed to teach children Englishpresumably because it would have cut into his audience share. The GOPs efforts to dismantle our public education system will allow his business to grow.
