My 20,000th post:

I wanted this post to be something more than "K&R" or "I disagree with that."

I decided to post about an organization I believe in and support. (I do not work for them). That organization is the Southern Poverty Law Center. I first became acquainted with their work when I was looking for a way to combat some skinhead behavior in my community high school in the 1990s.

The SPLC works to combat racial violence, violence against LGBTQ people, immigrants, children, the poor. They work through the courts and through publicity and with the support of people like us. This is an excerpt from their Weekend Read: Looking back at 2017:

2018 is fast approaching, and we're looking back on some of our most important reports from 2017.

Back in January, we released "Google and the Miseducation of Dylan Roof." How did Roof go from a childhood in a non racist home to being so steeped in white supremacy that he murdered nine black parishioners during a Bible Study? The answer, we found, lies in part with the extremist propaganda the Google Search yielded for the phrase "black on White crime."

In March, we published our first major piece of the year on civil asset forfeiture, a process that allows law enforcement to seize and keep billions of dollars in cash and other property from potential suspects - some of whom are never convicted or even charged with a crime. A holdover from the War on Drugs, civil asset forfeiture is ripe for abuse, particularly in the states that do not require law enforcement to report what they confiscate.

snip

In June, we published the first of two stories on Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Mississippi, profiling women and children left in poverty after ICE agents took their husbands and fathers.

snip

Some of the most significant work we did this year was on the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, the site of a Confederate monument that was slated for removal. Our Hatewatch team warned of the rally before it took place in August, and in its aftermath we were quick to publish information about the extremists behind it, expert analysis on the Confederate symbols, and resources on how to respond to hate and extremism.

I know that I and my fellow DU members will be working hard in 2018. We will be informing others and doing everything we can to GOTV. But please do not forget important organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center. They help us. They are some of the people who are actually making America Great.

And thanks for the update on the important work that the SPLC has been doing this year. With so many people busy shouting into microphones and shaking their fists, it's good to remember those who quietly roll up their sleeves and get the hard work done.
