A couple of days before Christmas,

My wife and I invited a neighbor woman out for dinner. She has become a good friend, and lives alone. So, we went to a local restaurant a few miles away. When I looked at the menu, there was a listing for a "Hot Dago" sandwich on the menu. Above that entry was a listing for a Pollock sandwich. It made me laugh. With a simple change of pronunciation, it could have been easily seen as another ethnic slur printed on the menu. I wonder how many people have mispronounced the name of that fish in that restaurant?

I ordered neither. But, I've always found it odd that we're OK with a sandwich bearing an offensive ethnic name. Why is that, I wonder?

We have a funny language. We have a funny society. Sort of. Well, not really...
