He's retired and living on Social Security and Medicare (current retirees likely unaffected by drastic cuts coming - all of the future retirees (me) will be screwed out of our retirement and healthcare) - his house is paid off. His car is paid off. He pays little to no taxes since he has no taxable income. My poor Democratic mother has lived with the ornery coot for years and she pays him room/board monthly. And she buys his groceries, cooks for him and cleans his house and does his laundry. He made more money than anyone else in the family when he was working and all that time with no house payments and collecting hundreds/month from his mother while paying few expenses (insurance, utilities, a little bit food but she bought most of it). He refused to repair his house unless he absolutely had to and drives his cars until they're completely dead. He's miserly, ornery, abusive, and selfish. IOW, he doesn't give a flying FUCK what the GOP does to taxes or Social Security or Medicare since it doesn't affect HIM. He's stockpiled and invested quite a wad and is living on that "socialism" Republicans hate so much but oddly never return the checks to the US treasury when they get them.
HE refused to vote for Hillary because, he said, he was "not going to vote for no feminism"
Yep. He's a lost cause. But regardless - in case there was ANYTHING in the man's head besides vacuum-packed hatred (even a molecule of light), I emailed him these three articles:

He replied with THIS:
The Roswell UFO Crash
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/10/11/1578699/-The-Roswell-UFO-Crash
What he meant was mockery. What he meant was minimization of the facts and concerns others in his country have. He could have just replied with two words: "fake news" -- though I doubt the UN is in the business of distributing propaganda for the Republican or Democratic parties -- and there is actual video of the Republican saying he felt bad about the tax scam and how unfair it is to working people but that he would vote for it anyway --- and that article about how Republican trickle-down theory is lies -- IS WRITTEN by Bruce Bartlette -- one of the creators of "trickle-down" back in the 1970s - 1980s. It's ALL. FACT. It ALL. HAPPENED. It's ALL. THE. TRUTH. It's ALL. REAL.
And what does The Republican send back in response? An article about UFOs. To mock. To minimize. To insinuate that none of what I sent has any more credibility than UFO stories. And even if it does, he doesn't give a fuck.
Typical Republican. I hope to God I don't lose all my Social Security before I get to retire (as he has voted for just that to happen). Because I want to stay AS FAR AWAY from this vile person as possible for the rest of my life. I'm on the other side of the country. And I want to stay on the other side of the country. I'll need a little retirement to do that. Like others, I've done all I'm supposed to - save as much as I can, have some investments, and hopefully will have something left of social security (the three financial legs of retirement). Millions like me -- who have DONE THEIR PART - DONE ALL THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DO to ensure a secure retirement -- to NOW HAVE ALL THAT TAKEN FROM THEM by "men" like my brother, Trump, the Kochs - TO HAVE THEIR FUTURES STOLEN FROM THEM so billionaires and big corporations can have HUGE UNNECESSARY TAX CUTS - is the HEIGHT of GREED and of EVIL.
I want NO PART OF IT or anyone who contributed to it. My OWN BROTHER voted to let ROBBER BARONS STEAL MY FUTURE FROM ME. And when I point that out to him, he sends me UFO stories. That's how much he cares. Why the hell would I want to have anything to do with human garbage like him? I don't. And I hope to GOD I never have to.

(9,302 posts)She's got COPD and AMD and I think she does it partially because she can't do much else and wants to stay active. He's told her she doesn't need to cook or clean -- however then she has to live in "batchelor" (not-so) clean house and she can't stand it. So she does what she can. It's not expected or required or asked of her.
IMO he should give her rent checks back to her or halve the amount she pays, but he doesn't.

(9,302 posts)My sister votes Republican too.
SHE. VOTES. FOR. HER. OWN. KIDS. AND. GRANDKIDS. TO. BE. UNABLE. TO. RETIRE. She votes to have their social security STOLEN from them by billionaires.
WHO DOESN'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THEIR OWN KIDS? OR their own biological sisters and brothers?
Republicans. That's who.
REPUBLICANS.
I just can't with it. It does not compute. But I'm not a Republican (aka sociopath). My amygdala is fully operative - so I cannot think that way.

(3,569 posts)I gave up that email exchange long ago with my Republican friends and family.
I booted em off Facebook, years ago. When I add friends I have a disclaimer about myself, beliefs etc, warning those from the right who I am and how to stay.
The last straw for me was during the election season I was at my local c offee shop. Us old geezers have been hanging here since the seventies. Old locals. Mixed politics, from people who "let slip" the N word, to me, a hippie stoner on SSI. We generally didnt talk politics, we were good at avoidance. But the primary to election season brought it out. The right could not stop talking. Chicago. EMails, benghazi, the uranium one etc. One day immigration came up. "We need to vet immigrants, especially refugees"
.My response was "uh, we do"
He went on to tell myself, and the table about how if you want to be a refugee and come to the US is make the boat. Or something about the ease to immigrate. Never mind the lack of logic that says a religious Refugee getting away from a Hardline religious geology would become terrorists in this country. I asked him what are you saying do you think Obama's is standing it's a Statue of Liberty waving people into this country without background checks he said yes. Hey had this argument frequently so I had the immigration website open. INS website. The one that says exactly how hard it is to become a refugee to this country. It takes 2 years. Your background is checked. Your religious connections and friends are checked. I offered to show him the website but he refused. He told me that despite what it said on the immigrations official website, Obama was letting people into this country without following the process.
That was it. I just dont deal anymore. When hes there, I stay away or sit somewhere else, and the same goes for those like him. Not worth it.

It's weird being related to someone like that, and staying as far away as possible is the only answer. For a long time I had the same worries as you do about not having enough for retirement, and what that might mean. Now that I've cut off contact completely I know I'll be ok, and it's better this way.
My motto was always "a bad day without them is better than a good day with them."
