from http://clerk.house.gov/floorsummary/floor.aspx?day=20171221&today=20171221

7:19:33 P.M. The House adjourned pursuant to a previous special order. The next meeting is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on December 22, 2017.

I don't think they actually recess anymore. This helps them maintain their "power over appointments." I think that mysterious "previous special order" is the cue.

I hope someone comes along who knows more than me so I can know too.
