E-Cigarettes To Be Regulated As Tobacco Products
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/26/e-cigarettes_n_853828.html

By MICHAEL FELBERBAUM 04/25/11 06:57 PM ET (AP)

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that it plans to regulate smokeless electronic cigarettes as tobacco products and won't try to regulate them under stricter rules for drug-delivery devices.

The federal agency said in a letter to stakeholders Monday that it intends to propose rule changes to treat e-cigarettes the same as traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products.

The news is considered a victory for makers and distributors of the devices, which continue to gain popularity worldwide.

Continued at the above link

Today, I am tobacco-free for 8 months (after being a 43+ year smoker)with the help of e-cigarettes. This is a very large win because there was a very powerful movement to ban them here in the US.

1. This is very good news!
Despite the misclassification (no tobacco involved unless you make your own juice with tobacco extracts), but "drug delivery devices" was INSANE. The FDA could just as soon regulate aluminum cans as alcohol delivery devices.

8. i think you are right. they sure wanted those things banned. not sure why.
people could use them to quit. also, they give them the nicotine without the second hand smoke everyone complains about.

16. If they do, it would only have to be on the nicotine ejuices. It will be interesting to see what
happens.

5. Congrats.
On both counts, congrats. Congrats on your quit, and on the victory for e-cigs.

E-cigarettes have nicotine, and it makes my atrial fibrillation worse, so I had to find another method to quit. I smoked for about as long as you, and have been smoke free for a little longer than you. Isn't it liberating?

Almost all the brands sell juice/cartridges with no nicotine.

10. Such a web of laws and regulation!
It may be a victory when considering the alternative, but e-cigs simply lose. Cigarette regulations are increasingly becoming draconian, especially when it comes to taxing and limiting where they can be consumed. Lumping e-cigarettes into the cigarette regulation arena is a pyrrhic victory I'm afraid.

I recently (~60 days) broke a 30-year 2-pack a day habit. I used the patch for 5 days, then a weaker version on and off for another 10 days (used 5 more of the step 2 patches) then just didn't bother. Haven't had a cigarette since. It is incredibly liberating to not fidget during a movie or having to plan (budget!) purchases so as not to run out.

Even after nearly 2 months, I still fight the occassional urge, but not so much the nicotine as the ritual and habit. It's also nice to breathe better, but I could do without the increased appetite!

11. Been Doing E-Cigs For A Month...
I was a 1 1/2 pack a day smoker for nearly 40 years. I'm not totally tobacco-free but I'm well on the way. I've found many non-smokers are tolerant and even curious about the device and how it works...and can't really smell anything. It also means a big savings...another nice benefit.

This is good to see but I expect the government to find a way to make money off of it...replacing the revenues lost from us ex-cigarette smokers.

14. Great Kharma! You might want to rethink the ecig you're using. A big eGo type seems
to work the best for heavier smokers. Less recharging makes it an almost no-brainer. :)

21. I stopped by using a 510 passthrough, which came before my 510 kit.
Edited on Wed Apr-27-11 11:12 AM by OmmmSweetOmmm
I was a heavier smoker than you at 3 packs per day, so I ran the 510s down pretty quickly.

I now use an eGo passthrough (most of the time as I work with my computers) and eGo-likes and a new mod the rest of the time. :)

Meanwhile, when I was at my local gas station/quick mart this AM, I found them selling disposables! They had two displays and one was entirely sold out. Just too cool! :)

23. My grandmother loves her ego. I got my silver bullet though, its pretty unbeatable.
There are fancier versions of it out now, but its still pretty much the top of line for vapor production and battery life.

27. I just purchased a kit that included a 3.7V Sparkplug 2 and a 6V Thermo,
really cheap ($34.95 shipping included). I'm waiting for the batteries for the Thermo but the Sparkplug is great. So much more vapor than 3.2v egos. I still like the way egos look and feel though. :)

Silver Bullets look wonderful! :)

The Omega is basically the silver bullet version 2.0 and the Alpha is a smaller version of it with a smaller battery. They are both beautiful looking devices.

too rich for my blood. :)

Unlike many people who stopped smoking, vaping isn't saving me much money at all as I used to stuff my own cigarettes at about $1 a pack.

32. Yea, I've had my SB for a year now and have no need for a new unit anytime soon.
I couldn't justify spending over a hundred bucks for a new one. But if I was a brand new user, I'd probably go for the alpha.

I bought a pack of camel lights everyday, so I'm definately saving money. After buying the SB, the only thing I ever buy is bottle of liquid and the occassional 510 atomizer. I spend 30-40 bucks a month tops, sometimes less. With smokes, it was getting to be 35-40 bucks a week when prices started going up.

33. I figured I spent $335.00 a month on cigarettes and will save well over
$3,000 a year by vaping. SOON, cigarettes will be $58.83 a carton here. I was smoking a carton plus 4 packs per week! And that $335.00 doesn't include hubby's cigars...which he has stopped smoking because he tried one of my eGo-Ts. :)

I'm buying a mod this weekend and hopefully that will be IT for e-cig buying...for a while. I had to buy batteries for the new mod, atomizers/cartos/DTs and had to get more e juice because I'm having a reaction to the 24mg and 18mg. I need to drop down to a lower nicotine already. I thought I'd vape 24mg and 18mg for YEARS since I was such a heavy smoker. That turned out not to be the case, but lower nicotine is GOOD. :)

35. I'm dropping down to 11mg-12mg and 6mg.
I think I over did it with my chain vaping such a strong mix. I have a bad sore throat, burning mouth, the roof of my mouth is very sensitive, I couldn't taste any of my juice flavors and I had a terrible, bitter taste when I drank water. It was BAD.

I'm also switching to mostly VG. I use 70 PG/30 VG right now. I understand some people can have a reaction to PG juices. That could also be my problem.

36. To save even more money,
I've been making my own ejuice. Also, I join buying co-ops at ECF's PIF sub-forum to save money on cartos, flavorings, etc. We've purchased directly from China and Italy (for flavour art flavoring). So I'm pretty stocked up right now. In a months time or so I'll need some more cartos.
We also have a Deal and Steals thread where members post current sales on ecig stuff they know about.

The beauty of mods is the fact that the batteries are so much less expensive than the other pvs.

I was a 3 pack a day smoker. To buy cigarettes here in NY where I live it's about $10 a pack! I started to make my own about a year before the dramatic rise, although every now and then I'd treat myself to a "real" pack. :)

39. Depending upon how many packs a day you smoked. you need an ecig or
mod to suit your needs so you're not always swapping batteries. Mods are pvs that are usually made by small companies and are the outer shell of a pv and they use replaceable rechargeable batteries. They usually give higher voltage than ecigs and produce more vapor.

In the ecig..if you're a light smoker a 510 or kr808d are good. The ego or ego type like a riva are great for moderate to heavy smokers. They're about stogie and cigar size.

Your super mini then can be passed on to another smoker.

Deals and Steals is at the E-Cigarette-Forum.com in the Pay It Forward sub-forum.

40. Thanks for the reply.
I'm actually a rather light smoker but uh, a heavier vaper, if that makes sense. Used to be a 2-pack a day gal, then quit for years, then started up on Tijuana Smalls last fall--2 or 3 per day. But the e-cig lets me "smoke" at my desk while I'm working so I'm using it more heavily than I did the little ceegars.

I'll check out the forum you referenced!

trying to give up cigs for the I don't know how many times before that, I started to smoke them. Didn't last too long. Shortly after that I gave up smoking for 3 years, and had a trauma in my life and went back.

Best of luck!

25. Always A Learning Curve...
I spent weeks following threads here and on other boards and found, as is usually the case, you try this and that until you find what works right. It's also learning by doing...and figured I'd jump in and things would work out...and so far so good. I definitely will look at the eGo when my current "stash" runs low.

It's great reading all these success stories and getting encouragement.

Cheers!

I spend a lot of time now on an ecigarete forum and a great Pay It Forward sub-forum there. The support system is phenomenal but frankly, there are 2 smokers here and I've had plenty of chances to "cheat". For the times I wanted to do that, I've taken deep breaths and have grabbed the closest PV. Then I question why would I want to cheat and have the taste of a dirty ashtray in my mouth?

I haven't even wanted a cigarette and still have 2 packs sitting in my freezer. For ME, that's a miracle. If they REALLY want people to quit smoking, e-cigarettes are THE answer. IMCPO

E-cigs are going to save a lot of lives for those of us who were crazy enough to develop the habit in the first place. After I started smoking, it was hell imagining my life without it. This device has changed my life.

The word is getting out on e-cigs pretty widely now. Any smoker that tries a good one will know whether or not it will do the trick.
