Seriously, if those soldiers don't get paid, there is gonna be a mass mutiny the likes we've never seen. Hopefully this means they will all come home alive as opposed to fighting for literally nothing and coming home in a body bag. Hell, that's why the vast majority of them enlisted in the first place, TO GET PAID! NO PAY, NO FIGHT!

1. I'd like it to finally put an end to endless Republican assholes in Congress.

3. Of course not. That's what giant puppets...
...with huge papier-mâché heads are for.

Again we forget the lessons of the '60's and are forced to learn these lessons all over again.

6. What stopped the Vietnam War? Actually, not mythologically.
Edited on Fri Apr-08-11 11:31 AM by Davis_X_Machina
It wasn't people in the streets. The war had majority support on the day of The Mobe. It wasn't Congress cutting off funding -- although that came close, it came later -- in '72, and especially in '73.

It was the executive abandoning the enterprise, after calculating its costs and benefits -- political as much as financial.

Vietnamization, and the war's declining popularity in the Republican heartland.

10. What stopped the war was pictures of soldiers dying being shown on the news.
we don't have that anymore. When was the last time you heard anything at all about the "two other wars" we are fighting on the tv news?

We here in DU are informed, the majority of Americans are not. They don't care. As long as the average schmoe has gas in the car, a weekend at the lake and cheap shit food to eat, nothing else matters. Regardless of how those "other wars" are killing their salary, cost of living and price of food.

Those are the forgotten wars.

We are a stupid people.

12. Fun fact: Gallup had under 30's more in support of the war...

....than any other age group right through the Vietnam era.

This, of course, is not what the legend tells us.

Much of what the legend tells us about that period turns out to be mostly...legend.

11. People in the streets. Yes, this I agree with. In fact, in January, 2007
my wife, our son, and I were in the streets in DC along with lots of other concerned citizens.

People in the streets is not the same thing as a govt shutdown.

5. No, we always seem to find money with which to wage war on the middle east. Always.

The RW meme of the day is the military won't be paid during the shutdown. So the GOOP will probably pass some sort of bill that keeps funding the wars through the shutdown, probably with some riders that further erode the safety net.
