46% of Mississippi GOPers think interracial marriage should be illegal
...a perfect example of why we shouldn't be putting people's civil rights, like same-sex marriage, on state ballots. 46% of Republicans in Mississippi think interracial marriage, like Obama's parents, should be illegal. I'm not surprised, but it is a teachable moment.

4. The thing that I would like to see with polls like this is
for them ask the people why they feel like that. Because I'm guessing the majority of those people will not have an answer.

6. I'm surprised the percentage is so low.
It is Mississippi after all. Entering that state is like going into a time warp.

10. I bet 96% would claim they weren't racists.
And they'd say it with a straight face.

And -- even worse -- I'll bet that of those 96% of Mississippi Republicans who would claim that they weren't racists, 96% of THOSE would actually BELIEVE that they weren't racists.

I hope I'm wrong and that there is something wrong with the original survey, but I'm also willing to wager good money that I'm right.

Many people will not openly tell a pollster that they have racist views.

14. Can you imagine how much higher...
...that percentage would be were the question reframed to reflect not law, but mere sentiment, as in "should they get married?" I'll bet it would be somewhere in the 80% range or higher.

I don't think that many GOPers, especially in Mississippi, can think at all.

31. As some one who teaches firearms usage and safety primarily to GLBT people, the two are tied
together. It is very hard to bash and armed person. See www.pinkpistols.org

The racist and classist gun laws we have today started as an attempt by the well off to disarm the poor and minorities. That continues to today.

I've been watching The Civil War by Ken Burns on PBS this week. (Third time through.) Sadly, I think a conflict like that could overtake us again.

25. Good news...
Most Mississippi Republicans are for interracial marriage. Gotta look at the bright side...

Plus, I bet support for it grows slowly over time.

Really, if you had asked me what percentage I thought, I don't know I would have been as optimistic as this poll.
