Take this manufactured outrage over light bulbs.

Four years after President George W. Bush signed a bill making those newfangled fluorescents that look like pigs' tails the bulbs du jour, it dawned on legislators like Rep. Joe Barton that they didn't much like the government dictating personal choice.

That's especially a hoot coming from Barton, an Arlington Republican who has made a crusade of having Congress tell college football how to choose its national champion.

One of the stupidest myths concerns the mercury in the bulbs. I actually amounts to as much as can be contained in this period. Here's another one. Here's as much mercury as in all the light bulbs in your house.......... Ted Poe should be more concerned about all the lead paint he apparently chewed on when he was a kid.

and I am slowly replacing incandescent halogens with LEDs. They're not quite as efficient as CFLs but they are far more compact, provide full brightness at once and show less fading with age. Other than that the family has used CFLs for years in low occupation rooms. Savings pay for the bulbs within 2 years even at currently inflated prices for the bulbs.
