Poll question: What effect did Obama's speech tonight have on your position on Libya?
Just curious to see what, if any, minds were changed tonight.

2. Btw, for people who were interested in the Juan Cole column
Edited on Tue Mar-29-11 11:58 AM by EFerrari
over the weekend, he was in a debate today on Amy's show that was pretty good:

As President Obama defends the U.S.-led military attacks on Libya we host a debate. University of Michigan Professor Juan Cole has just published an article titled “An Open Letter to the Left on Libya." Cole defends the use of military force to prevent a massacre in Benghazi and to aid the Libyan rebel movement in their liberation struggle. In opposition to U.S. intervention in Libya, University of Trinity Professor Vijay Prashad warns the United States has involved itself in a decades-long internal Libyan struggle while it ignores violent crackdowns by U.S.-backed governments in Bahrain, Yemen and other countries in the region.

3. The article was interesting.
I have to admit that I'm very torn on this one. I think both sides have made some pretty good points. People reducing it to "isolationists" vs "warmongers" are just way too binary for me.

My biggest concern is just that I have zero confidence that the U.S. will get anything right in the Middle East, or if they even want to. Or I should say, right for who? Our decades long history of meddling over there isn't a foundation that I can rest any real confidence on.

4. Imo, this situation will turn out to be every bit as complicated
as Iraq. And I agree about our track record, plus throw in our usual methods and our government's goals which usually turn out to be humanitarian interventions for Wall Street first.
