Hot Mic Captures Joke Between General Petraeus And Secretary Gates About Libya

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and General David Petraeus know plenty about war and defending America, but apparently don’t know much about the dangers of a hot mic. After Gates exited his plane, Petraeus greeted him and exchanged a joke about Libya that was surely meant to be for Gates’ ears only.

Petraeus jokingly said to Gates, “Welcome back, sir, flying a little bigger plane than normal . . . you gonna launch some attacks on Libya or something?” Gates laughed and replied, “yeah, exactly.” Well at least the General is eager to keep up troop morale?

Petraeus, Gates caught joking about launching attack on Libya

Kabul, Mar 8: Television microphones have picked up the US commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, joking with Defense Secretary Robert Gates about possible military intervention in Libya.

Gates arrived in Afghanistan on Monday for an unexpected visit to assess ground conditions, as the Obama administration prepares to pull some troops out of the country, Politico reports.

“Welcome back sir, how are things?” Petraeus was heard saying, as he greeted Gates on the Kabul airport runway, according to a transcript of a US television crew.

“Well, I think you have a bigger plane than normal, you’re going to launch some attacks on Libya or something?” Petraeus jokes.

“Yeah, exactly,” Gates replies.

President Barack Obama had earlier said that the NATO is considering a “wide range of potential options, including potential military options” against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his allies. (ANI)

Libya attack joke backfires as US military chiefs get caught on open microphone

The US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has been caught on an open microphone joking with General David Petraeus about bombing Libya.

Gen Petraeus greeted Mr Gates at Kabul airport joking: “Welcome back, sir, flying a little bigger plane than normal, you gonna launch some attacks on Libya or something?”

The US Defence Secretary responded to the comment by laughing and replied: “Yeah, exactly”.

Mr Gates arrived on Monday for a two-day trip and visited Camp Leatherneck in Helmand after issuing a public apology over a Nato air strike last week that targeted insurgents but killed nine young boys who were collecting firewood in eastern Afghanistan.

I suppose if Mr. Petraeus had ever found himself on the other side of the bombs he so blithely drops on other people, it might not be such a rib-tickling subject. Maybe if his kids woke up shrieking in the night whenever a loud noise happened outside. Or for no apparent reason.
