Plant oil key in the fight against obesity
A University of Missouri researcher has found a plant oil that may be able to reduce belly fat in humans.

Belly fat leads to serious medical problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke.

In the study, James Perfield, assistant professor of food science in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR), found that a specific plant oil, known as sterculic oil, may be a key in the fight against obesity. Sterculic oil is extracted from seeds of the Sterculia foetida tree.

The oil contains unique fatty acids known to suppress a bodily enzyme associated with insulin resistance, which could indirectly help with reducing belly fat. Previous studies show that reducing the enzyme in rodents improves their metabolic profile, improving insulin sensitivity and reducing chances for later chronic diseases.

I've done several searches for this oil and can't find anything! If anyone finds a source, can you please PM me?

1. Just a start:
I'm starting my search with the plant itself, Sterculia foetida, hoping it leads to pertinent information on the oil and studies mentioned.

2. It's sometimes known as "Wild Almond" or "Bastard Poon" tree-
or Tropical Chestnut, as it grows in Puerto Rico. Its the same member of the family of trees as the Cocoa tree, and the seeds need to be roasted before they can be eaten or they can cause nausea. And with foetida in the name, I suspect it's not the most fragrant of trees.
They make Gum Karaya out of it, which is often used as a thickening or emulsifying agent in foods.

3. Funny how Nature provides almost all of the cures for what ails us...
...and how Western society dismisses it as "holistic" and "New Age," while at the same time swallowing any synthetic drug concocted in a lab that has a list of side effects a mile long.

16. +1 I understand people being wary of snake oil salesmen, but...
It's what Big Pharma wants you to think of anyone offering a natural cure.

6. I'm the EO girl
I work with and help many people with essential oils in my home holistic business. I'll look into this. There is another essential oil that works with the body's blood sugar. It is called Ocotea and it is from Ecuador - info:

Extracted from an Ecuadorian tree, ocotea has the highest level of alpha humulene of any Young Living essential oil, which is a compound that helps aid the body's natural response to irritation and injury.* Ocotea also has natural cleansing and purifying properties.

I'll grab my Essential Oils handbook and see if I can find info on sterculic oil..

13. Annette, thank you.
I will appreciate any info you can provide. These scientists performing the experiments are obtaining it from somewhere, right? I can't believe they're getting the beans and processing the oil themselves. If you are familiar with another oil that acts the way sterculic oil does, I will appreciate that info as well.
