NEI Post new fact sheet
There has been some speculation that, if the used fuel pool were completely drained, the zirconium cladding might ignite and a “zirconium fire” might occur. Studies performed by the Department of Energy indicate that is virtually impossible to ignite zirconium tubing.

I know some personal friends earlier today were concerned about this so I figured I'd post this info out there for those interested.

1. Here is another NEI fact sheet
NEI: The lobbying / PR wing of the U.S. nuclear industry

The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI)<2> is described ...as "the propaganda wing and trade group for the American nuclear industry spends millions of dollars annually to engineer public opinion".<4>

NEI’s objective is to ensure the formation of policies that promote ... nuclear energy in the United States and around the world. It has over 280 corporate members in 15 countries, including companies that operate nuclear power plants, as well as design and engineering firms, fuel suppliers and service companies, and labor unions.<5>

... NEI also takes part in Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth, a group funded by the gas, oil, electric and nuclear industries. <7>

In recent years, the NEI has used a variety of approaches to try and win the PR battle to secure a new generation of nuclear power plants.

3. The nei is pro-nuke but I think the fact sheet is accurate and the updates on the Japan plant seem
to be what is happening. I'm just trying to get people information. Not spew pro-nuke propaganda.

4. Sourcing them is no different than sourcing Fox News.
No, actually you are spewing pronuke propaganda for that is the SOLE function of the NEI. They are responsible for an endless string of right wing lies. Sourcing them is no different than sourcing Fox News.

5. I think if you want to know what is going on at the nuclear plant you would want to have info from
nuclear experts, even if they are proponents of nuclear energy. I really don't understand your logic at all.

If you had a friend or colleague that was a nuclear engineer wouldn't you be asking them questions if you wanted to know the mechanics of what is happening in Japan? Even if they were a Pro-nuclear?

I think most intelligent people would want to get information from various sources provided those sources had an expertise in the field.

6. They are more than proponents of nuclear - they are part of a sales organization
The NEI is an industry PR group. What you are saying is that during the Deepwater Horizon spill, the American Petroleum Institute would be a credible source of information.
