Iraqi-born filmmaker beaten up in Iowa, while making a film about discrimination

"Fairfield police are investigating an attack as a possible hate crime Saturday against a Baghdad, Iraq-born American who is working on a film about discrimination against Arabs.

Usama Alshaibi, 41, who grew up in Iowa City, said he was repeatedly punched and kicked around midnight Saturday by four men whom he encountered after dropping by what appeared to be a house party in Fairfield, a southeast Iowa town of nearly 9,500.

The beating left Alshaibi's face bloodied and bruised, police said. Fairfield Police Chief Julie Harvey confirmed police are investigating. "He was beaten, and our officers think he's credible," she said. She told the Associated Press, "Is it a hate crime? Yeah, by what they were calling him.""
