'The Help' - Texans Will Hire Mexicans As Long As They Know Their Place
Proposed Texas immigration law contains convenient loophole for ‘the help’

Texas has long been a hotbed of controversy on immigration issues. And a proposed immigration bill in the Texas state House is sure to raise more than a few eyebrows. The bill would make hiring an "unauthorized alien" a crime punishable by up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine, unless that is, they are hired to do household chores.

Yes, under the House Bill 2012 introduced by a tea party favorite state Rep. Debbie Riddle -- who's been saying for some time that she'd like to see Texas institute an Arizona-style immigration law -- hiring an undocumented maid, caretaker, lawnworker or any type of houseworker would be allowed. Why? As Texas state Rep. Aaron Pena, also a Republican, told CNN, without the exemption, "a large segment of the Texas population" would wind up in prison if the bill became law.

"When it comes to household employees or yard workers it is extremely common for Texans to hire people who are likely undocumented workers," Pena told the news giant. "It is so common it is overlooked."

1. Aaron Pena = fucking turncoat
:grr: :nuke:

but yeah, I had to laugh when I read the part about exempting folks for hiring undocumented as maids or gardeners, because along the border, that's what everyone does.

2. Republicanism is a form of aberrant brain development. And we have to share this country with them.

4. I'm trying to look at this objectively.

It looks like she put the loophole in there to get the bill passed.

The merit of the bill being that there is a substantial penalty for hiring non-citizens. (I like that term over "alien").
This is a good thing, in my view. Why? Because I hate non-citizens? No.
Because if there are consequences for hiring slaves to pick tomatoes and work in a chicken slaughtering plant, then the corporations would be forced to hire citizens. And if citizens won't work for x amount of money, then they will have to pay more.

I make no guarantees to the representative or her past. But isn't this what we want in this country? Jobs and wages people can live on? So she had to exempt people that hire slaves to nanny their children or do housekeeping. That's unfortunate. But it's better than nothing and the vast majority of slaves are in agriculture and construction. Don't quote me on that.

edit:
Disclaimer: The article was from Yahoo. Typically those are skewed in favor of the right. So it could be that I have been led to believe this is favorable.

5. The "substantial penalty" does not apply to domestic workers.
Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 05:11 PM by walldude
This is not only not favorable but it is hypocritical. And I certainly do not understand your view here.

Basically what this law says is "stay out of the country unless you are willing to work cheaply in a domestic capacity". It's bullshit of the highest order. Either they are allowed in or not. I don't see how not fining people in Texas for using illegal workers is good for American jobs.

6. Exactly. It's hypocritical but it's a compromise. To get the bill through a state full of
gun slingin hypocrits.

8. Republicans like cheap labor.. If only they could find the "Perfect Mexicans"
Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 05:22 PM by SoCalDem
Young, strong (16-30) , mute eunuchs, willing to work for $5 hr & arrive early-leave late (with their own transportation)

They love the work part, but unfortunately for republicans, most young, strong immigrants are NOT eunuchs, or mute and they will almost always fall in love & then procreate.... and. HORRORS!.. sometimes they even end up with a non-Mexican girl:) Or many already have families at home, and look for ways to bring them here to join them

<the same is true with the young females hired for domestic work>

Once that happens, their focus changes to good schools for their kids, doctors for their kids, a decent place to live..you know.. the SAME stuff that republicans want for their own families..
