There's a mini ice age coming, says man who beats weather experts
December 21, 2010 - 4:41PM

Piers Corbyn not only predicted the current weather, but he believes things are going to get much worse, says Boris Johnson, London's mayor

snip

Allow me to introduce readers to Piers Corbyn, meteorologist and brother of my old chum, bearded leftie MP Jeremy. Piers Corbyn works in an undistinguished office in Borough High Street. He has no telescope or supercomputer. Armed only with a laptop, huge quantities of publicly available data and a first-class degree in astrophysics, he gets it right again and again.

Back in November, when the Met Office was still doing its "mild winter" schtick, Corbyn said it would be the coldest for 100 years. Indeed, it was back in May that he first predicted a snowy December, and he put his own money on a white Christmas about a month before the Met Office made any such forecast. He said that the Met Office would be wrong about last year's mythical "barbecue summer", and he was vindicated. He was closer to the truth about last winter, too.

He seems to get it right about 85 per cent of the time and serious business people - notably in farming - are starting to invest in his forecasts. In the eyes of many punters, he puts the taxpayer-funded Met Office to shame. How on earth does he do it? He studies the Sun.

He looks at the flow of particles from the Sun, and how they interact with the upper atmosphere, especially air currents such as the jet stream, and he looks at how the Moon and other factors influence those streaming particles.

He takes a snapshot of what the Sun is doing at any given moment, and then he looks back at the record to see when it last did something similar. Then he checks what the weather was like on Earth at the time - and he makes a prophecy.

1. Interesting.
Jessie Ventura said that one of the reasons for the BP spill (which he said was done on purpose) was to bring on another ice age.

8. I haven't seen his show yet...

I always enjoyed Jessie when he'd make an appearance now and then. I was a little disappointed when he got a show, as I guess I felt he'd "hype" things if he had to deal with ratings, advertisers, etc. I hadn't heard the "done on purpose" theory regarding BP, though it certainly doesn't surprise me.

Do you enjoy the show thus far and find it informative?

Thanks. :)

2. Well if he's correct about this
maybe we can buy some much needed time to get a real anthropomorphic global climate disruption treaty negotiated and ratified.

There might be hope for us yet, if the Koreas don't ignite a global nuclear conflagration.

4. That's if we don't freeze to death first.
That's if we don't freeze to death first. :)

From the SMH article:
I have not a clue whether his methods are sound or not. But when so many of his forecasts seem to come true, and when he seems to be so consistently ahead of the Met Office, I feel I want to know more. Piers Corbyn believes that the last three winters could be the harbinger of a mini ice age that could be upon us by 2035, and that it could start to be colder than at any time in the last 200 years. He goes on to speculate that a genuine ice age might then settle in, since an ice age is now cyclically overdue.

6. well, two things
How much accurate data is there from the sun, and how far back does it go?

Years ago an ice age was predicted to be setting in, @1960, and the theory goes is that anthropocentric warming has pushed it back more than a few years. If true, then that would mean the force towards an ice age has been building up a head of steam since it has been stopped.

12. In the coming Maxi Plutocrat Age ...
... there will be a lot of people freezing, heat stroking, and starving. However, that might be ancillary to the thesis of the OP.

5. He better notify those shipping companies that are now using the Northwest Passage.
Also the US Coast Guard just created a brand new Search and Rescue station in the furthest North US village, Pt Barrow, because of such an increase in shipping in the Arctic including tourist ships..

7. curious
this is similar to the predictions of a new ice age back in the 70s.

Climate change predictions blew that out of the water though.

Thanks for the post, I will be trying to follow this one.

13. Shh if the conveyor belt shuts down
there WILL BE a mini ice age in Europe.

this is predicted by global warming science and has all to do with influx of fresh water, less dense, into the system... read ice melting.

14. 12 recommendations for a Tory politician advertising a global warming denier?
Shit, DU really is going down the drain. Look, everybody, at what is the first thing on his website:

The Climate Fools Day Meeting in Parliament Room 10 on Weds 27th Oct 2010.

- Marking the 2nd anniversary of the UK Parliament passing a Climate Act against nature (29th Oct 2008)

Piers Corbyn (centre) is being awarded the StairWay Press first annual Ernst-Georg Beck Award for Scientific Integrity and Competence (BASIC) by John O’Sullivan Author.

The meeting - “The necessity for Evidence-based Science & policy – Not the Carbon Con!” was supported by a simultaneous event in King George Square, Brisbane, Queensland and covered three times during the Day by Russia TV and an extensive array of websites around the world.

Speakers were: Jens Rodrup - Climate Sense Denmark; Rvd Philip Foster, Author While the Earth Endures - Climate The Long View; Piers Corbyn, Astrophysicist, WeatherAction - Why it’s not CO2 + Proper science predicts extreme weather events & Climate; Peter Gill, Physicist & Energy expert - Fictitious ‘tipping points’ + Facts about CO2; Christopher Booker, Telegraph Columnist - The most expensive Bill in history; Sammy Wilson DUP MP and Dr Ian Strangeways, Hydrologist + Expert on weather data. Apologies were received from Graham Stringer LAB MP, a scientist and a number of Tory MPs. Present & discussing afterwards included Gabe Rychert – Climate Realists; Graham Capper (chair) - Climate Sense UK + Copenhagen Climate Challenge; John Sanderson - Royal College of Science Association; & Hans Schreuder – ILoveMyCarbonDioxide.com. Videos, Reportage and links including details of the Ernst Georg Beck Award and Climate Sense Awards 2010

That's right, it's him boasting how various global warming deniers gave him an award, in which they called the settled science that anthropogenic carbon dioxide causes global warming a 'con'.

And people recommend this shit when a British Conservative politician writes about it in the right wing Telegraph?

:banghead:

15. They told us back in the 70's this would happen
Global cooling, new ice age, etc and so on.

Also told the world would end I don't know how many times.

I'll worry about it later, got some D&D to play :)
