To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

METHODS OF URBAN GUERRILLA WARFARE

Facing and attacking a heavy armed enemy face on, with only a few hundred people, is mass suicide. Until tens of thousands can be mobilized to swamp them, it is better to attack from behind and sides.Urban guerrillas should avoid engaging enemy forces in prolonged open combat. Attack and quickly withdraw. Engagement in open combat is left to mass movement swamping the enemy with its hugely superior size.

What tactics?
1) ambushes, traps and sniper fire
2) assaults, raids and penetrations
3) Roadblocks,diversions, ruses, interception by other vehicles
4) Seizures, expropriation of weapons, ammunition and explosives
5) Sabotage, mines, bombs, cutting communications
6) Liberation of prisoners, kidnappings, executions

Ambush has especially devastating effects on the enemy, leaving him unnerved, insecure and fearful. Superior local knowledge of the terrain is a key advantage to be exploited to the full. Regular ambushes mean the capture of more and more weapons and military materials for distributing to people. One successful tactic in the Spanish Civil War was workers boarding trucks and driving them at full speed at the ranks of the fascist troops


The same is true of sniper fire, which can also hold a street, stop an advance as well or better than a tanks or artillery. The purpose of the ambush is to capture enemy weapons and to punish him with death. Traps such as enticing the enemy into a cul-de-sac and firing from all sides, can also be supplemented with mines in the road. A temporary roadblock or pincering pick-ups with two moving cars and fire power. Another way to trap is to feed the enemy with false information of an event at certain place to lure them there. Use of cover with buildings or other things is important.

Iran has said it will remove fuel rods from its Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant, a move that is being seen as a major setback to the country's nuclear programme.

The decision, announced on Saturday, comes just months before the facility, which is located in the southern city of Bushehr, was scheduled to go into operation to generate electricity.

"Based on the recommendation of Russia, which is in charge of completing the Bushehr atomic power plant, the fuel inside the reactor core will be taken out for a while to conduct some experiments and technical work," Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said.

Galyna Kolotnytska, described in a diplomatic cable published by Wikileaks as a "voluptuous blond" who "travels everywhere" with Col. Gadhafi, called her family in Kiev on Friday to say she intends to return to Ukraine, her daughter told daily Segodnya.

"Mom got in touch yesterday. She said she was now in Tripoli," Tetyana Kolotnytska said. "She spoke in a calm voice, asked us not to worry and said she'd soon be home."

According to the cable from September 2009, contacts in Tripoli told U.S. diplomats that Col. Gadhafi "relies heavily" on Ms. Kolotnytska, then 38, as "she alone 'knows his routine.'"

On its official Facebook page, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces issued an apology to the 25 January youth for what it described as "unintentional friction" between military police members and youth protesting on Friday.

The council affirmed it is keen on achieving the noble goals of the revolution, adding that no orders were or will be given to attack Egyptians. All necessary procedures will be adopted to avoid the repetition of such clashes, the message said, without giving further details.

In a second statement, the army said it would "immediately release all the youth of the January 25 revolution that were detained in Tahrir Square (on Friday)", but did not say how many there were.

In response to the use of force to disperse Friday's protests calling for the removal of Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq's government, hundreds of Facebook activists called for a protest today in Tahrir against using force on peaceful protesters.

The FBI allegedly told an informant who infiltrated a California mosque to dig up dirt on the immigration status, sexual activities, business problems and drug use of members of the community. A discrimination lawsuit filed against the Bureau this week charges that they hoped to use the information to convince those members to become FBI informants.

Craig Monteilh, whose aggressive tactics as an informant in 2006 led worshipers at the Islamic Center of Irvine to file a restraining order against him, is now cooperating with the plaintiffs in a lawsuit that accuses FBI agents of violating the constitutional rights of hundreds of Muslims.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on behalf of three Muslim plaintiffs, claims that the FBI violated the constitutional rights of Muslims by targeting them indiscriminately because of their religion. It requests unspecified damages and a court order to return or destroy all the information that Monteilh gathered.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has spoken out against the United Nations imposing sanctions on Libya, warning that the Libyan people would suffer most, not Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

Erdogan also suggested Saturday that the international community was acting out of concern about Libya's oil reserves and not its people.

Erdogan spoke hours before UN Security Council members were to meet again to discuss ways to punish the Libyan leader for his violent attacks on anti-government protesters.

The Italian news agency AGI reports that Qaddafi's son Seif al-Islam is staying on message. Speaking of the reports of the killing of demonstrators, he said Saturday: "Soon you will discover that what you have heard about Libya is only a joke. A big joke. Here we laugh about the news speaking of hundreds or thousands of victims, bombings in Tripoli, Benghazi, Zawiya or any other place, and of mercenaries."

It increasingly appears that all of the country save Tripoli, the capital, is in the hands of the protesters.

This update from Al Jazeera includes video of Seif al-Islam in denial mode, as well as footage said to show Libyan army soldiers joyously joining demonstrators. It also includes some bloody scenes from Friday of protesters being fired upon.
