Republicans Wave Bible; Why Not Democrats?
by Gabe Berman

Gabe is the author of Live Like a Fruit Fly.

As soon as I learned my ABCs, my dad began clipping out articles for me to read from the New York Times. But ever since my parents became snowbirds, I see a fair share of cutout columns on the kitchen table from Floridian newspapers. This morning’s version was a letter to the editor from Fort Lauderdale’s Sun-Sentinel by a resident named Jack Newton.

I continue to be amazed at the middle-and lower-income people who vote Republican against their own self-interest. If I am struggling to make ends meet, as an hourly or salaried worker, without a huge bonus at the end of the year, why would I vote for Republicans who fight the minimum-wage law and now favor a tax cut for the rich? If I lost my job or fear that I might, why would I vote for Republicans who fight against unemployment benefits? Why would I vote for the current Republican governor who wants to lower corporate income taxes, which would invariably result in higher taxes on the little guy? Why would I vote for a Republican who wants to cut government regulations that protect me?

So why does the little guy vote Republican?

Republicans gather votes by opposing abortion, by opposing gay equality and by convincing low-and moderate-income people they should be more concerned about the federal deficit than their own well being.

Why can’t Democrats learn to use the Bible? It is God-like to advocate healing the sick, feeding the poor and educating the masses so they can be upwardly mobile.

Thank you, Jack Newton, for proving you don’t need to be Sir Issac Newton to see the truth if you actually want to.

1. The Republican Bible book jacket may say "Holy Bible", BUT
When you take the jacket off, it really is "Atlas Shrugged"!

16. No, it says Old Testament
Sorry but the bible is a hateful, most unenlightened document. There are some things worth keeping in the NT but otherwise it is worse than useless, it's harmful!

3. The religious right is the anti-Jesus.
There isn't much more in this world that is as hypocritical.

4. I do. I live in a 90% xtian, 90% Repub area.
they wear their Christianity like it was this month's fashion choice.

I like these quotes

""Jesus answered, If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'" Matthew 19:21

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in." Matthew 25:35

"They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely." Mark 12:40

But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind." Luke 14:13

anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:17-18

and,especially this

"Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, 'Here's a good seat for you,' but say to the poor man, 'You stand there' or 'Sit on the floor by my feet,' have you not discriminated among yourselves and becomes judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He promised those who love Him? But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?" James 2:2-6

but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.

6. It's only the abortion issue. It should've never been illegalized,
then it wouldn't had to of been made legal. The same for drugs. They were all legal at one time. Not approved by the government but not disapproved either.

and everything he said are inconveniences for many "christians". They'd just as soon do without him altogether.

10. As a lesbian democrat these questions make me more than a little sick @ my stomach
I've already got one group of people who hate me and vote against my interests openly. Now this guy is suggesting that the Democrats do the same? That they too use the Bible as a tool to take away people's rights even when the Constitution says that religion should stay out of government. I think the question really should be, why are the majority of the people in the United States not screaming that religion be taken OUT of politics?

For anyone even considering this idea as a valid one, think about all the uproar here recently about the (Rs) wanting to redefine the definition of rape to save the "souls" of the unborn from being "unfairly" aborted. Or the douche's in, where is it, South Dakota, that are trying to make it a law that if you kill an abortion provider, it's not murder. This is what "waving the Bible" is getting for us in America these days. I, for one, don't want to be a member of a party that is trying to create a theocracy.

nor are flag wavers patriotic.
My religion and love of country are my own private concerns.
I may not profess to be a Christian but I know one when I meet one!

religion should not dictate policy. Or even debate about policy.

24. Right-on
America is not a Christian nation. It is made up of many, many religions.

I saw a poll the other day stating 80% claim to be Christians... I wonder how many REALLY claim this.

22. Christian Dems generally not motivated to vote based on that issue
based on religion. Republican Christians generally belong to congregations that actively seek them out to vote conservative. So while Dems do from time to time frame issues in religious context, they don't seek out to frame ever issue this way. Why? because while their base probably is Christian, they aren't generally organized as a Christian voter. It's hard for you to capture a Christian voter, when their religious leader isn't only telling them the opposite of your message, but they are telling them to vote Republican.

25. Perhaps because the Ds are more honest
But more likely because it would require arguing the point with deceptive, lying hucksters who have long polluted the bible with false interpretations of it's content.

Oh and the Pentecostalists and the Southern Baptist Convention are solidly Republican too.

26. This all makes me think of a facebook post I saw today (which made my stomach turn)
someone wanted everyone to pray for her as she was going on a job interview. She wanted people to pray that "His will" be done.

Obviously, His will was that she get the job. How convenient that it was also her will as well.

I supposed Dems could twist up various holy books to make themselves look good, but I prefer they don't.
