I never imagined that Republicans would pull what they're trying to pull in Wisconsin, and I am extremely happy and proud of the community to see the way the people have responded. This is a just protest and one richly deserved.

I still don't think it will lead to anything like the ultimate situation in Egypt. But Wisconsin is definitely a microcosm of the people versus power dynamic we might very well see play out in every other state trying to hamstring the unions/public employees.

So, my apologies to those who thought I went too far in trying to separate Egypt from us and solidarity to the good people of Wisconsin making this stand.

1. It isn't just Wisconsin,
Edited on Thu Feb-17-11 12:50 PM by HereSince1628
It's happening this week in at least Idaho, Florida, New Jersey, Ohio and Tennessee in addition to Wisconsin.

But it's all happening in a media black out. Keeping us unaware of each other makes us seem smaller and more isolated.

How do you suppose that happened? How is it that network affiliate stations can show live car chases, responses to exploded buildings, and airplanes landing without their wheels down from nearly Everywhere USA, but they can't show hundreds of workers protesting in multiple state capitals?

This is hardly an accident.

2. I know it is not just Wisconsin, but I wanted to start there with the size of the walk out and
the Democrats joining them.

The media coverage has been shameful, to say the least.

3. the MSM conspiracy of silence is news itself.
We created the interest in the US Atty. scandal. We can do it again with this issue.

But kudos to the author about recognizing that Egypt is having an impact on us, too.

4. Wisconsin is just a ahead of the curve here
The Republican Governors in other states are planning the same things.

They must be stopped in Wisconsin in hopes of preventing this all over the country.

5. Yup, I totally agree.
May this be the start of a populist movement that shows the Republicans that power does not always mean control.

6. K&R.....But it is possible WI is creating a ground swell.....
It took Egypt many years to get their fill....If we let the unions fail in the US...it would be catastropic....I am not a Union member but I remember all the times the Unions made a difference....

7. I think a lot of people thought Union fangs had been dulled by bad press

elections of conservatives, etc. I think some politicians got a little too full of what power means. I think they have no idea how hard it would be to force teachers to work once you take away their right to collective representation and bargaining. Finally, I think they've made a huge mistake in underestimating the power of the people but are too stubborn to admit it.

I fully expect the Republican governors to double down and push even harder.

8. UNIONS......
When the going gets tough....the tough gets going....This describes...UNIONS...Republicans fear UNIONS...as a matter of fact most are probably, loading their weapons right now....but the Unions have truth on their side...Looking back we should all be ashamed of ourselves for not supporting them more....

9. And I agreed with you
But I definitely now think Egypt is an inspiration for many of the Wisconsin folks.

10. Not sure inspiration vs. opportunity
I still think people got carried away, and I really, really hated the wishing for revolution without understanding the differences between the countries.

But, to be fair, I also didn't think we would see a mass protest over policies anywhere in the US. Of course, I defend that by saying I had no idea that Repiblican governors would be THIS crass.

11. And I agreed with you, but something is in the wind. As another DUer pointed out,
it was 30 years ago that Reagan busted the Air traffic Controller's union and I think America is waking up to the blowback from it.

I'm optimistic!

12. Like I said, I think people underestimated what Union Strong means when push comes to shove
And all the villifying of unions will not stop them from publically fighting to keep rights they've earned. We'll see if this blowback against policy or a solidifying behind the unions. I think it might end up being blowback.
