Obama Is Hurting Poor People in Ways ACORN Blocked Bush from Achieving
http://smirkingchimp.com/thread/david-swanson/34308/obama-is-hurting-poor-people-in-ways-acorn-blocked-bush-from-achieving

Obama is seeking to cut off poor people's heat in the winter and AC in the summer, in a move that Bush attempted and saw blocked by ACORN.

This brings a whole new meaning to Obama's "ACORN who? Never met them in my life!" routine when Fox News destroyed the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now with a big assist from Congress.

Let's take a little trip back in time, shall we? All the way baaaaaaaaack to 2003:

While 50 ACORN members were in the Illinois Republican Party headquarters, the phone rang, and an ACORN member answered it "ACORN, Can I help you?"

3. Fox/Breitbart/O'Keefe et al never could have brought ACORN down
without the help of Democrats who shamefully voted for a bill put forth by Daryl Issa that was later ruled to be unconstitutional. Only 75 Dems voted against that bill.

So, it was a bi-partisan take down and a disgrace to watch it happen.

HHS releases $200 million in emergency funding to states for energy assistance

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today the release of $200 million in emergency contingency funding to help eligible low-income homeowners and renters meet home energy costs. These Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) contingency funds will provide states, territories, tribes and the District of Columbia with additional assistance to pay heating and other home energy costs.

“During the cold winter months, heating your home becomes more than a matter of comfort,” said Sebelius. “The release of these emergency funds will help low-income families and individuals afford the high energy costs rather than force them to make cutbacks on other essentials.”

LIHEAP helps eligible families pay for home heating, cooling and other energy costs, as well as helping to weatherize eligible families’ homes.

The $200 million in emergency contingency funds released today are in addition to the basic LIHEAP funding made available to states under the continuing resolutions since October 1 totaling $3.9 billion for Fiscal Year 2011.

“Low-income individuals and families are hit hard by energy costs,” said David A. Hansell, HHS acting assistant secretary for children and families. “We are releasing these emergency funds to states to help meet the critical needs of vulnerable children, seniors and families.”

10. Guess what -- they're still using ACORN as a bogeyman
I've been keeping an eye out for this stuff, and there was an article yesterday in the conservative publication Human Events by Matthew Vadum of the Capital Research Center. The CRC, which is closely tied in with the Heritage Foundation, has been after ACORN since 1998, and Vadum in particular is responsible for a lot of the bizarre connect-the-dots conspiracy theories that we know best from Glenn Beck.

Here are a few paragraphs. Note the characteristic tone of guilt by association:

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=41696

As the remnants of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now regroup in order to bring chaos to the 2012 election cycle, ACORN’s renamed New York chapter is teeming with activity.

The successor organization, called New York Communities for Change (NYCC), operates out of the same office on Nevins Street in Brooklyn that is home to ACORN and its partisan arm, the socialist Working Families Party of New York. Longtime ACORN leader Jon Kest is executive director of NYCC. Kest is the brother of Steve Kest, former executive director of ACORN, who has joined fellow radical community organizer Van Jones as a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank that functions as a public relations firm for the Obama administration. . . .

NYCC, which reportedly shares board members with New York ACORN, is already waging war against Walmart, which is hoping to open a store in Brooklyn. ACORN has always had a special, visceral contempt for Walmart because it is not unionized and hasn’t given money to the in-your-face protest group to make it go away. NYCC describes Walmart as "frightening" and accuses it of "wage violations, gender discrimination, and paying staff poverty-level wages," all of which are smears that the labor movement routinely employs against the company. . . .

That ACORN was transforming itself and planning to resurface under a new name was reported in these pages 10 months ago. The group filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Election Day to minimize media coverage of the legal proceeding.
