Students try to stop Bristol Palin's stupid speech!
Saint Louis (Sapientia Media) " Ire towards a planned speech by Bristol Palin has gone viral at Washington University in St. Louis in the day following a $20,000 funding approval for the event by the university`s Student Union. With the goal of discussing abstinence during its Sexual Responsibility Week in February, the Student Health Advisory Committee submitted a $20,000 funding request for the speech that was approved in a 7-4-1 vote by the Student Union Treasury on Tuesday night. Studlife, the campus newspaper of Washington University, broke the news to the student body shortly thereafter with an article that has served as an impetus for frustrated students, planned protests and attempts to repeal the decision.

A message of abstinence is respectable and should be validated by a speaker, but please bring someone to Wash U who can broaden students` thought processes and experience " stated student Jennifer Shirar, reflecting the general sentiment that 20 year old Bristol Palin may be unable to provide meaningful insight to the student body. The Wash U College Democrats organization created a Facebook event entitled "No thanks, Bristol!` with the goal of organizing active protests of the speech. In the single day since its creation, over 800 students have marked their intention to attend. The event`s size is currently over five times that of the Wash U College Democrats Facebook page itself, quelling concerns about purely partisan opposition.

Efforts by students to stifle the speech have focused on Article IX Section 1 of the Student Union Constitution, which allows for a referendum to occur upon the submission of a petition containing the names of 5% of the student body. Sources place this number at 302 names. At 6:45pm on Wednesday afternoon, the Facebook page "Digital Petition for SU Referendum on Bristol Palin Speech` (http://facebook.com/suPalinPetition) was created by Sapientia Media with the goal of rapidly reaching this number. As of press time, 436 students have joined the digital petition and the list continues to grow as the social media effort has gone viral among its target audience.

Referendum efforts were stifled at a Student Union meeting on Wednesday night when it was determined that the organization`s madnated 10 day minimum waiting period preceding a vote on a referendum would exceed the time it would take for both parties to sign the contract for the speech, at which point a refund would not be possible. This has lead organized efforts to end the event into disarray and frustration

The parasitic Palins need to go suck money somewhere else.

27. Perhaps the parents should deduct an appropriate amount
from the next tuition payment, along with a note explaining that their student's payments are not to be used for obnoxious ideologues' idiotic "speeches".

If the fee is $20K and there are 500 seats , that works out to $40 per student.

16. Huh. One would think that if they had the signatures for the referendum, that would prevent the
signing of a contract until the outcome of the referendum is known. Seems like a no-brainer. If the powers that be can hurry up and sign a contract during a mandatory waiting period, the constitutional right to have the referendum is effectively circumvented. Hard to believe that such a ruling would stand. Certainly doesn't pass the laugh test.

35. Any contract lawyers out there who want to comment.
It seems to me that once the contract is signed it will be binding UNLESS the signing authority doesn't actually have the authority at the time of signing, in which case whomever signed the contract would be PERSONALLY responsible for the debt.

But I'm not a lawyer, I just hire them as needed (FYI - I LOVE LAWYERS - most of em stand up for the little guys - it is my contention that one of the reasons that the rich want to destroy the middle class is so that they also destroy the professional class except those that they keep as trained ponies).

36. It stands to reason that if a referendum is scheduled the signing authority is not there.
Anyone with any sense at all would not sign a contract under those circumstances. And presumably they have to get some kind of approval from the University Comptroller before they could legally sign such a contract.

53. Unfortunately it doesn't stand to reason.
The authority is granted with the position. In my case as the VP of operations for this facility I have binding signing authority, and who ever has it for the institution has it as well.

What a referendum would do would be to modify policy (board level decision) which would then flow down to the administration who would then be tasked at carrying out said policy. As such, until the policy is changed (even on a ad hoc basis such as this), the authority would remain in place until removed. A wise admin would NOT put their head on the cutting block just to prove a point. This doesn't mean that this admin is wise.

It is likely that the deadline being pushed is being pushed from Jr. Miss Grifter's camp. If they can get the contract signed then they get the money and deliver the speach, or the admin ends up cancelling and paying (perhaps a percentage,, perhaps all) anyway.

23. They should not be giving a platform to someone like Bristol who has used hate speech like "Faggot"

and worse in the national media. Nor should they be spending their students money on an event that polarizing.

I really hope those 800 people attend to protest. I'm at UGA, where we have more than twice as many students as Washington @ St. Louis, and I really doubt 800 people would even attend a Bristol Palin event to hear her speak. And thats here in the heart of the Palin base. If 800 people show up there in St. Louis to protest, the protesters would probably outnumber the attendees by 2 to 1. LOL

I wish the students at Washington U. LOTS of luck. The teabaggers on the board of the CSU, Stanislaus foundation shoved her down our throats and trucked in her supporters by the hundreds to both attend the event and counter our protests. Palin supporters are a rabid bunch so the students at WU better be prepared. They are getting ripped off BIG TIME. For god's sake, I remember taking a sex ed. class in jr. high eons ago and they brought in THREE unwed teen moms to talk about abstinence for free. I'm pretty sure St. Louis has plenty of girls in the same shoes as BP (minus the grifting family and ignorant sheep behind them) who would speak for a fraction of that.
