Wow. The 13 top threads on the Greatest page
are all Olberman stories.

Shiny!

Meanwhile the wars continue, SocSec is being prepped for surgery, and Jeff Immelt, having sent thousands of GE jobs to China, goes to Washington to prove that what's good for GE is good for America.

17. Really? We had not one voice in TV media and then we got one.
And you think that's too insignificant to mention? And now we are losing it because of a merger that is entirely against the interests of the American people? And you think that's too insignificant to mention?

Really?

32. Ultimately, it's something like that that inspired this thread.
I'm a country-dwelling, gardening non-TV-watching old fart who doesn't probably recognize the significance of KO since the only time I see him is when someone posts a Utube segment.

5. At least it draws attention to media consolidation and mega-mergers
In the end, we'll likely have just two 'news' channels on TV (good cop/bad cop; right/left; democrat/republican; Frick/Frack, et al.)

Then we'll have Endless War™.

After learning the hard way, I have little hope left.

The rest of America better wake the fuck up, and prepare for hard times (folks in places like Detroit know what I'm talking about).

29. Yep, Swampy! I'm no fan of corporation-dictated propaganda, either.
And I believe the freshness of Keith's dismissal warrants heavy discussion, considering the timing & the unfair legal limitations put on Keith: MSNBC/Comcast can talk about their spin reasons for Keith's departure, but Keith is prohibited from talking about it. What are they afraid of?

This isn't an important issue? :eyes:

8. And that bothers you, why? DUers want to talk about it, and that's
why we come here. Nobody has forgotten for a second about the wars, the fragile Social Security status, nor the questionable choice Obama made about his appointment of Immelt. If people are upset and angry, this is the place to come for support.

There are over 300 million people in the US. We tend to overestimate the importance of cable news people around here.

Think he'll bring even one GE job back home? My best guess is that his goal is to make American workers accept 7 cents an hour or as close as he can come.

26. The San Diego Chicken syndrome
I've got nothing against Olbermann. In fact, I'm somewhat of a fan (especially since, like me, he's a huge Bob and Ray fan).
But our celebrity culture, this obsession with TV personalities who talk politics over the people who actually make things happen (or not) can be a great big (and often pointless) distraction.
Kind of like the people who cheer wildly for the San Diego Chicken but don't pay much attention to the actual game.

But this is NOT a "shiny." We don't have many voices like KO's, annd the fact that he got canned means that not only do we have 1 fewer, others will be afraid to speak the truth or get canned in ways that don't involve severance pay.

The larger issue is this- the fewer mainstream voices we have, the more underground we all go, and the further the lie goes that this is a "conservative" nation.

This is NOT a conservative nation- it's a nation that is spoonfed the agenda of a few power players and told that we all have to do it for the "good" of the country.

I never once believed that Democratic Underground would be truly driven underground again during a Democratic Administration...but that just shows that I did not grasp the seriousness of the situation.

Half the time I disagree with myself.

In this case, though, I gather that Olbermann was reaching maybe 0.5% of the voting population.

Keith Olbermann's departure is because there will be one less person to explain to us that the wars continue, SocSec is being prepped for surgery, and Jeff Immelt, having sent thousands of GE jobs to China, goes to Washington to prove that what's good for GE is good for America.

. . . . some say Olbermann is the left wing version of Limbaugh. Some of the behavior I've seen since Friday night indicate that, for far too many, this is true. You should see some of my e-mail.
