Hawaii lieutenant gov. picked to fill Senate seat

By BECKY BOHRER
Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) -- Hawaii Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz on Wednesday was appointed the state's next U.S. senator, bucking the dying wishes of U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye to win the support of Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

Schatz, a 40-year-old former nonprofit CEO who ran with Abercrombie for the state's top two offices in 2010, beat out U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The three candidates were selected by state Democrats earlier in the day.

The White House said Schatz would fly to Washington on Wednesday night aboard Air Force One, which was bringing President Barack Obama home early from his Christmas vacation as Congress considers what to do about the so-called fiscal cliff.

<snip>

Under state law, the successor had to come from the same party as the prior incumbent.

Inouye, by far Hawaii's most influential politician and one of the most respected lawmakers in Washington after serving five decades in the Senate, died last week of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He sent Abercrombie a hand-signed letter dated the day he died, saying he would like Hanabusa to succeed him, calling it his "last wish."

The last wish of long-serving Senator and war hero Inouye aside, skipping over a member of Congress for a U.S. Senate seat in favor of a 40 year old Lieutenant Governor is remarkable.

Akaka is retiring at the end of his term and his replacement, so Hawaii will now have two total newbies to D.C. as its only Senators.

The Governor said that he did not want to lose the seniority of the Congresswoman in the House. However, two total newbies to D.C. in the Senate is, IMO, a bigger issue for the state than losing the seniority of one of its Reps in the House.

In any event, I cannot imagine that Inouye, being who he was, made a choice for Senate that was not, in his mind, the very best overall for the state of Hawaii.

Also the gender issue should not be disregarded lightly by a party that just won seats in both houses, especially the Senate, on the basis of dumbass remarks made about women by Republicans.

Schatz, who attended and taught at the same Hawaiian school that Obama attended, headed the Obama campaign in Hawaii, but I am sure that had nothing to do with any of the above, with the possible exception of the ride to D.C. on Air Force One.

2. .Wild guess: You can bet your sweet voter registration on it.
Do you have any idea what it took to type "voter regisration" in that subject line, instead of something less polite?

3. Wow. Reading the wikis of Abercrombie and Schatz a bit further is very interesting.
Abercrombie, born and raised in Buffalo NY, got to Hawaii in 1959, about the same time as the President's grandparents and mom did.

He befriended and attended classes with President Obama's parents (even though Ann Dunham is four years younger?).

Then there's this:

div class-excerpt]Abercrombie first participated in a political campaign in 1970 as "Super Senator", seeking the Democratic nomination to the United States Senate. Unsuccessful, Abercrombie ran for the Hawaii State House of Representatives where he served from 1975 to 1979.

So, Abercrombie was 32 when he ran for U.S. Senator, while the minimum age is 30. And what the hell does it mean to run for the Senate at age 32 as a "super Senator" when its your very first political campaign, state or federal?

Schatz attended the same private high school as Obama, and seems to have become a community activist while still in school. While going to college, he took a training course in Kenya, which supposedly prepared him to be a better public servant. He became a state senator at age 26 and head of the Democratic Party of Hawaii at age 36.

I would add the obvious: both Abercrombie and Schatz are white males in a state that is less than 25% white and a state that has a record of electing minority women.

Buffalo? Ann Dunham and Barack Obama, Sr.

Punahou and Kenya?

Seriously, what are the odds here?

6. I think these people are central to "the plan".
The new and improved final solution or something.

7. The final solution seems to be killing off most of us. Just posted about that on another thread.

Unlimited money for war, including what they steal from Social Security.

Cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, fuel subsidies to the poor, etc.

Fewer people, less pollution.

Global warming solved.

Planet will sustain the grandkids of the globe's 1% of the 1%.

Yeayyyyy!

Not yet, anyway.

9. Perpetual war is seen as highly desirable to some.
So, we know that one is correct. Unlimited resources for the military at the expense of the less fortunate? Yup, clear as can be. It is starting to smell an awfully lot like Third Reich stuff to me. Hey, you're either with us or against us.
