Married Republican mayor Chris Myers has quit - two months after he was accused of having sex with a prostitute at a California hotel.

The anonymous allegation against the father-of-two, who was mayor of Medford in New Jersey, was posted on a website and included a photo of a man who appeared to be him, in his underwear.

He said Myers contacted him through a male escort website and they met at hotel in Newport Beach, California.

He complained Myers paid him $500 but didn't fulfill promises of a car and other gifts. He said on the website that the broken promise was the reason he was taking his story public
