A little help answering my father-in-law's email
I just got this in my email, my father-in-law's attempt at "humor", and I quote:

"A LITTLE SOMETHING TO CHEER YOU UP"

(Back story: My wife, who works in the family business (as do I) and has MS, had a bad fall three weeks and broke her arm, requiring surgery. The night before this email, she had a seizure (her first ever) and we spent the night in the ER.

Between these two incidents, we now face medical bills that even WITH insurance will cost us $6,000+ and counting, out of our own pocket. Added to our insurance premiums and medication co-pays this year, and we will be spending about a quarter of our income on medical bills).

So, then this little gem arrives, and for some reason I don't find it particularly funny:

It's just hit me !!

My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day.

He has his food prepared for him. He can eat whenever he wants, 24/7/365.

His meals are provided at no cost to him

He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year if any medical needs arise.

For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him.

He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep. If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up.

He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep.

He receives these accommodations absolutely free.

He is living like a King, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever.

All of his costs are picked up by others who go out and earn a living every day.

I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick in the head.......

My dog is a Democrat!

Now, I started a reply to this, which would have ended "Then it hit me....

My intestinal parasite is a Republican!!"

But, I have to work and deal with this man on a daily basis.

Perhaps some more tactful DUers could come up with a rejoinder to this. Me, I am trying to get my diastolic blood pressure down bellow triple digits.

1. If you have to work and deal with this man on a daily basis.
Then he's a certified moron for sending that to you. As such, all bets are off. I'm sick of walking on eggshells around these idiots. Sometimes you just have to call a dumbass a dumbass.

The only thing that Repukes like that can comprehend is a direct assault on their delusional beliefs! That's the way I do it with some of my inlaws, and we're still talking.

It looks like a viral email that people forward, not something your FIL created. I wouldn't bother replying. It's trivial, and he's probably already forgotten about it.

16. if the father in law forwarded it it is because he read and approved of
the message and wanted his democratic daughter and son in law to read it, he is an asshole pure and simple. i would tell him to fuck off, tell him he is no longer welcome around his grandchildren, and tell him that if he ever needs money he can get a job, even if he is 90 and dying of cancer. i would wish him a slow, painful death due to illness which would result in him becoming homeless.

really?

he ran a successful business. how well did he compensate his workers? did he crush their union?

plus he sent it to you when his daughter was scheduled to go in for surgery and when he knew you would be hurting for money.

i may be harsh, but i cant stand people like that and i tend to be more of a dick with my in laws than my own family when i cant stand their politics, it is a character flaw i have

22. Forwarded, but I tend to see this crap all the time
My current impulse is to reply thusly:

Well, gosh, ya got us. We Democrats sure are lazy, shiftless and expect everyone else to provide for us rather than actually working for a living (although, to be accurate, I am a liberal, not a Democrat, especially since the current Democratic party is to the Right of Richard Nixon).

If only I could aspire to the moral rectitude of a Republican, like say, the current presidential frontrunner, Newt Gingrich. You know, the guy who cheated on his first wife, then divorced her when she had cancer, then cheated on his second wife, and divorced her when she came down with Multiple Sclerosis. He has since converted to Catholicism, and has been welcomed into the church for his opposition to gay marriage (you know, those people who are destroyed his previous two marriages) and his fierce support of "traditional marriage and family values".

I wish I had his pragmatic conviction that child labor laws are "silly" and that poor nine-year old children should work as janitors in their own schools.

If only I had the drive to rise to the third most powerful job in the country, then sell myself out to any individual or corporation with a six-figure check.

Maybe it is just the last few days, maybe I'm a little think-skinned and/or sleep-deprived, but somehow, I missed the joke.

8. sometimes the simple way to deal with this shit is to face it head on.
So, are you calling me a dog? My wife? The only people who are living in such luxury are the representatives in the pockets of corporations and the corporations themselves.

Once my BIL went on a rant about single women living in trailers with multiple kids living on welfare. So I said... wait a minute... I am not married and have a kid and I live in a trailer. So are you talking about me? He sputtered and his face turned red as he wrapped his logic in a pretzel to make it ok for me yet somehow be a valid argument.

Not sure if that would work for you, but you have every right to be steamed. You are struggling just to stay afloat while people like this are probably the ones that cheered the let him die crap. It's a tough call though. You have to work with him everyday, but then again, your non response might make him more bold about it.

25. i told my ex wifes aunt to go fuck herself and threw wine in her face
because right at the moment i picked up a loaf of bread on the table she said the french for "these damned foreigners come here to steal our bread and have kids to get public aid". we had just had our kid 1 year earlier, all kids get aid from the state even rich ones so she knew we got aid, and i am a "foreigner" here as i have nationality but am an immigrant.

she is right wing racist nationalist so i cut right through the bullshit, i got up, threw her bread (we were at her house) on the floor (after hitting the wall with it) picked up her wine class and threw all the wine on her staining her clothes, then i picked up my "allocation baby" and left.

this was not the first time she insulted immigrants while eating with me so i had fucking had it,

between that time and 2 years later when my ex left me she never made another anti immigrant comment in front of me.

when he was ranting about Pell Grants etc. I told him I was one of "those people" who went to college on a Pell Grant, as did my daughter, as did HIS son when he was staying with me. He changed his tune and said he really should study up and know what he's talking about instead of just going along with what people at work are saying. He's the only repub among a sea of libs, so he didn't have a choice but to see our side.

They increase the chance recipients will have a higher income and pay more in taxes (much more than the grant itself) and decrease the chance they will need additional assistance.

I sleep 6 hours a night.
If I want to eat I have to cook.
If I want to cook, I have to purchase the meals.
I visit the Dr. when necessary, Pay co-pays, prescriptions and insurance premiums.
I live in an apartment and pay the rent every month.
If I, or my sons make a mess we clean up after ourselves.
I sleep on an old bed with an old mattress because a new mattress is not in my budget.
I live like a peasant.
No one gives me anything.
I work 2 part-time jobs, one of them at minimum wage, because the wealthiest Americans destroyed the economy for everyone else.
My son is in the Air Force guard, working his way through college all on his own.

I am a Socialist.

I am the 99%

You on the other hand are so easily swayed by corporate propaganda that you time and time again vote against your best interests, unable to see that you are also part of the 99%.

Edited on Mon Dec-05-11 01:36 PM by Botany

He loves almost everybody regardless of race, creed, color, or sex.
When he doesn't like somebody he has a good reason to do so.
He is always happy to see me no matter how much money I have, what I am wearing, or the kind of day I am having.
He guards my house and family out of love and loyalty.
When he plays "snuggle monster" on the couch with my son as snow falls around my house I am the richest man in the world.
He would give up his life in a minute to help his "family"*

Dear father in law. Your letter is full of lies and you know it you asshole. Like most Republicans, most Democrats work. Many Republicans and Democrats work and you know it you asshole. Your daughter and i just lost out on 6000 dollars in medical costs which we would have never had to pay if the usa had adopted single payer national health care with price controls for the cost of health care and you know that too. I hope you get cancer, don't have money for treatment and when you come begging your daughter and I for money to pay we will give you good, traditional, Republican family values, we will let you die and just for being a "poor deadbeat" we will wish you to die a slow, painful death. dont bother showing up at our house, you are no longer welcome. You sent us that message knowing we were democrats and calling us lazy house dogs, so really, and truly, in the words of your beloved VP Dick Cheney, GO FUCK YOURSELF!

"when you come begging your daughter and *me* for money"

To figure out the correct usage, pretend he would come to you alone. You'd then say, "When you come begging me for money". The personal pronoun stays the same, even though there are two people (daughter and you) he might come begging to.

64. It depends on whether
the "x and I" is the subject of the sentence, or as in this case, "x and me" are the object of a preposition.

My daughter and I went to the movies. That's correct.

The ticket seller wasn't very nice to my daughter and me.

I know people who will always use the construction "x and me", regardless of the actual part of speech that it's being used for. Others always use "x and I". Again, if you drop the "x and" part of it, you will probably say it correctly every single time.

85. To test out the usage in your head before you write it
omit the "x and" part to tell whether it "sounds right". For example:

(Reggie and) I went to the movies. "Me went to the movies" is obviously incorrect.

The ticket man was not very nice to (Reggie and) me. "...not very nice to I" almost leaves a stain in the ear. :)

That's a tip I learned way back in ninth grade. Hope it helps.

As you well know, my wife (your daughter), who works in the family business (as do I) and has MS, had a bad fall three weeks and broke her arm, requiring surgery. The night before this email, she had a seizure (her first ever) and we spent the night in the ER.

Between these two incidents, we now face medical bills that even WITH insurance will cost us $6,000+ and counting, out of our own pocket. Added to our insurance premiums and medication co-pays this year, and we will be spending about a quarter of our income on medical bills.

So, you will understand that for the above mentioned reasons, this Democrat doesn't find your message particularly funny or uplifting.

If the subject comes up in person don't even recognize it as anything was ever said. No one can force you to debate. I have had things like this happen to me and immediate family members and nothing pisses them off the more than ignoring they're ignorance. If they continue to egg me on I just say, "I stopped participating in naive grammar school debates years ago and refuse to do so now."

If so, write him off. He's hopelessly screwed up. If not, send him an email saying that, under the present circumstances, he should rethink what he wrote and think about his daughter's illness and the mental trauma it's causing her and you. Tell him that his insensitive email added to that trauma, and that it wasn't welcome.

Write without rancor and let his own conscience provide the punishment. That's my advice. Then hit him up for the $6000 co-pay.

34. Yes, he and my mother-in-law
were at the hospital.

They do care, but I am proscribed in my responses since I don't want to cause my wife grief. They do love and care about her, and I am NOT the son-in-law they would have picked for her (was told that to my face at one point).

At this point, I would chew off my left arm and sell both kidneys rather than take any money from him.

30. I would answer along a similar vain.
These RepubliCONS need to be called out their crap. Nice Democrats who never talk back, only encourage bullies like this.

I would say something along the lines

It's just hit me !!

My dog watches me all the time to see if I want him to do anything for me.

He does whatever I tell him to, whenever I tell him.

He is loyal to me no matter if I would kick and beat him, or treat him with love.

He is always happy to see me even when I force him to sleep in the dog house.

He willingly lives off of my scraps and crumbs.

He knows if he stood up to me he would be out in the cold immediately.

I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick in the head.......

My dog is a RepubliCON!

31. my reply:
It just hit me !!

My parrot watches Fox News 20 hours a day.

Does no thinking for himself and would kiss the ass on any wealthy person who asked him to.

My parrot favors more tax cuts for the rich even though he isn't rich and never will be and will wind up paying more taxes himself in the process.

My parrot likes to make simplistically irresponsible arguments on behalf of people he doesn't even know in the hope that some day he can be one of them.

My parrot spends money he doesn't have on things he doesn't need to impress people he doesn't know.

My parrot projects his own laziness, racism and misery onto others. He hates Americans that stand up for themselves because he can't bring himself to see the truth that HE IS NOT RICH AND NEVER WILL BE ANYTHING MORE THAN A (self-hating) MEMBER OF THEIR ASS KISSING FAN CLUB.

My parrot is very disappointed in the field of Republican candidates and keeps saying that one is not quite as bad as the others and then he learns more about that one and doesn't like him either.

And then it hit me like a full can of pepper spray fired directly into the mouth of a Constitution-loving, seated, passive, non-violent protestor at U C Davis. It hit me like a police baton smashing the truth-telling camera of a legal observer...my parrot is a Republican!

Btw, I asked him who he wants to see in the Whitehouse in 2013 and he just kept saying "Polly want a cracker. Polly want a cracker."

that is the best advice I can give you. Smile, nod, and don't say a word. I've kept the peace for over 10 years now and it has worked remarkably. They are in their mid-80s now and won't be here much longer. It's not like I'm going to change his mind anyway and it's less stressful for me to just let it go.

Younger acquaintances and friends are a different story - then I'd say something. I tend to post my little gems on Facebook and many are from the Christian Left group that I found. They can't argue with bible verses ...

Edited on Mon Dec-05-11 01:44 PM by librechik
Nevertheless, because I am Republican I am praised and pampered as if I really worked hard for the money that accumulates in my bank account without any effort from me whatsoever.

I am a Republican and I've never had to miss a doctor's appointment because I couldn't afford it. I have the best medical care that money can buy. My neighor, A Democrat, went bankrupt and lost his house after he had a heart attack. Typical irresponsible liberal!

I am a Republican so I live in a nice house in a gated community so I never have to even think about poor folks except when I fear that they will break in and rob me.

I am a Republican and I have my choice of luxurious homes to sleep in that sit empty when I don't use them because I don't care about the homeless.

I am a Republican so I have friends in the banking industry that make sure I pay bottom dollar for my real estate and financial investments, and make huge profits if I sell.

I am a rich Republican, so I get a lot of free merchandise, meals, and accommodations, because that's what I'm entitled to.

I pay very little taxes on my millions, the lowest rate in history, so the US Taxpayers are paying my share when it comes to taking care of the country. Too bad, they should have been born rich like me if they didn't want to pay taxes.

I was thinking about all this when suddenly, a brick hit me in the head--it was thrown by a Democrat.

So you admit your dog is smarter than you are?

If your dog is a democrat then you are a socialist.

Your dog is your property, comparing him to a human shows how screwed up in the head you are.

If your dog was really a democrat he would have run away from you long ago.

Doesn't your dog provide any value at all? Security? Companionship? Possible health benefits from pet ownership? If so they you are just an ungrateful conservative who can't see the value in something if it is licking your face.

I could go on but why bother. There is no arguing with a closed mind.

Free burglar alarm system, complete with toothy visual deterrent in conjunction with the auditory alarm.

Unconditional love... yeah, the dog will love him no matter how ignorant he is, and doesn't care that he's a Republican.

Exercise... if he's actually taking care of the dog he will get coached to walk. If not, he at least gets coached to do bending exercises for doggie duty removal.

That's just off the top of my head... hard to put into words all the benefits I get from my dogs.

So there goes that one!

If he knows you are a Democrat, and your wife is, "We are Democrats and we work in your business every day!"

Democrats don't want to not have to work - they just want a safety net for people who can't find work or get sick or injured. Things are only funny if they have a grain of truth to them and this doesn't!

He's old and tactless. So what? Why get in a fight over it? He doesn't run the government or the medical industry. I doubt he was thinking of any comparison with you when he forwarded it. He's ill. Maybe he's going to die soon. Would you want some disagreement over a stupid email to be your last exchange with him?

90. Here's my best effort. Too bad it's WAY down the page.
It's just hit me !!

My dog doesn't mind polluting where he lives.

He constantly begs his masters to "trickle down" scraps.

No matter whether his masters mistreat him, he will still lick their feet.

He despises the other dogs, and thinks of himself as just like his masters, even though he is not and never will be.

He does not think, but instead listens to his masters, and obeys them blindly.

If his masters take his possessions for themselves, he will not object.

He would gladly fight with other dogs and do himself and them harm, so long as it pleases his masters.

He will do something wrong, and expect you to have forgotten the very next day, even if it's on video.

He will try to have sex in public places, like an airport bathroom.

He is at his very happiest when his masters give him directions, for he is lost without them.

I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a set of Newt Gingrich divorce papers.......

My dog is a Republican!

Let it go. Don't mention it to the wife. It's unfair, but you save her stress that way, and I can tell from the way you talk that she comes first. Be the great guy that you are and take one for the team. Payback can always come later, even if it's peeing on his grave on the sly ("I was just marking my territory like the dog I am!").
