Two hypotheses as to why Jerry Sandusky is talking to the media
1. He is a dumbass who has shit for brains lawyers who don't know what they are doing.

2. He and his lawyers are trying to set it up so that he can deny culpability at trial, that he somehow does not understand that what he did was wrong and evil, and therefore cannot be held criminally responsible. His comments to the media reveal a fundamental failure to grasp that he did anything wrong. I'm saying maybe that is all an act.

1. He's going away for a long, long long time.
His selection of lawyer - a guy who impregnated a teenage girl (!!!!!) - alone doesn't help his case at all.

The interview with Bob Costas, the riots, that one guy who's come forward with 100 counts of abuse... this whole thing stinks. He needs to be removed from society.

2. He's trying to pull a Blago
trying to taint the potential juror pool. The difference his Jerry looks like the monster he is.

6. Valid suggestion. He's probably not counting on the Judge's interrogatory:
You say you have seen coverage of the accused with regard to this matter. Do you believe you are still able to render a fair and impartial verdict?

He probably will try to get the trial moved--but that might not help, either. Hard to know if he'll be less hated in a new location; probably not, because he's disgraced the school and the state.

3. I think it's number one.
Along with a good dose of desperation--there's so much evidence against the guy that he knows he's fucked, so he wants to try a desperation maneuver of fighting in the court of public opinion.

8. If there is any justice this will go Federal
for crossing state lines. The first suit (100 incidents victim) lists attendance at a bowl game. There are no bowl games played in PA. That is at least 2 victims transported across state lines.

14. And that would solve the "tainted pool" problem. Great point, that. nt

5. He is a mentally ill pedophile?
I think they will have a hard time proving diminished capacity, as he's already feigned repugnance at the accusations--denying that he did anything "bad" or "wrong."

He's sticking to the Michael Jackson defense -- he just loves to be around innocent children...oh, and the elderly, too.

I don't think his crap will fly, though. The stars, and the witnesses, are aligned against him.

22. that's exactly what I think - the MJ defense
His attorney also has said that Sandusky is just a big kid himself which was another part of the MJ defense. Every time Sandusky opens his mouth he goes on and on about how he just looooooves kids. Same Michael Jackson thing... the old 'I'm just a big kid and just looooooove kids so how can it be wrong blah blah blah'.

It isn't going to work and it backfired with the first interview... any time Sandusky opens his mouth he only sounds even more creepy and guilty.

7. My question is: Why is the New York Times talking to him?
They're no more than a tabloid rag in this.

10. It's a national news story? What makes it "tabloid" to you? It is ONLY being called the biggest
college scandal ever.

Paterno was FIRED, just after being LAUDED as the winningest coach. You don't think that's a story?

It brought down a major University President. You don't think that's a story?

13. Penn State is a really fucked up university, this ain't a tabloid story.
2 years ago they got notoriety from being "America's best party school", AKA, it's full of binge drinkers who trash the town, I remember the NPR report on that.

11. Whatever the reason, his lawyer either feels there's no way to
defend him, so he might as try what everyone knows is normally the worst thing a defendent can do, talk to the media.

16. You know, that could well be it--he's been so insulated by this crazy world
of football in an isolated environment, that he has no real concept of how the rest of us are seeing this.

21. #1 works for me
I don't think he's all that smart, to be playing five-dimensional chess games with the legal system. Pedophiles always see what they're doing as kind, rather than the pure fucking evil that it is. I hope he spends the rest of his life with a "friendly" cellmate.
