Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden Draw Boos at NASCAR Event

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden were grand marshals at today’s NASCAR season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, appearing as part of their charitable campaign to support military veterans and their families.

But their benign, bipartisan cause wasn’t enough to prevent public fallout from the nation’s polarized political climate as they were introduced before the crowd.

ESPN video from the event documented loud boos from some in the stands as the announcer named Obama and Biden, seconds before they delivered the “most famous words in motorsports,” telling drivers to start their engines.

---

Look dissent is patriotic, so if they're offended by jobs bills or the killings of Osama bin Laden & Moammar Khadafy, they're totally within their rights to boo the wives of the Prez & Veep. Or maybe they take Mrs Obama's war on obesity as a personal affront. But show a little class, folks. If the cause is supporting the families of the military, I think we can all pull together on that one.

5. You also missed lowering of the bar to what's considered a "war"
Although I'm not sure what Obama did to get to seven that Bush only did enough of to count to two.

2. The Whole World Saw That.
It just reinforces the Southern stereotype -- unfortunate because NASCAR fans do not represent the entire South but too many people, especially overseas, don't know that.

sadly, I wasn't surprised at the childish behavior of some people. In fact, I knew it was coming as soon as I saw the women had been chosen as Grand Marshalls.

Republicans just don't like strong, democratic women. We are threatening.

11. Nascar is centered on American made cars Chrysler, GM, and Ford.
If it were not for the Obama administration they might have Ford only. Another example of denial of your own self intrest. Left to Republicans there would be no Nascar they would have had to run cars that were no longer manufactured.

12. How is BOOING the First Lady & The VP Wife "Patriotic"...
Edited on Mon Nov-21-11 09:14 AM by SkyDaddy7
When they had NOTHING to do with any policy championed or enacted by their husbands? Just curious?

Dissent is not "Patriotic" when it is focused on the wrong people.

15. The Associated Press reported that the two women received a standing ovation at the pre-race meeting
A source traveling with the first lady downplayed the incident, telling ABC News there was no discernible booing during the “loud chaotic program with jets flying over and tons of noise.”

The Associated Press reported that the two women received a standing ovation at the pre-race meeting with drivers, during which Obama said NASCAR was “amazing in terms of its support, not just today but every day, for military families.”

31. The actions of the drivers do not excuse the actions of the fans.
Moreover, Presidents and first ladies have been receiving standing ovations at such events for decades. Its not news. The drivers have a sense of decorum.

Booing the first lady, while certainly a right, is not a common occurrence. Which makes it news.

The thing I find interesting, is that the same folks who booed the first lady are very likely the same kind of folks who display an endless stream of mock patriotism, while claiming President Obama hates America because he didn't wear a flag pin.

16. I saw a clip of that on the news this morning
What made it even worse was the fact that there was a group of children standing there w/the First-lady and Jill Biden-

Not sure why; didn't hear the explanation as to what the children were there to represent, but the booing was probably not pleasant for them either. Kids have a way of internalizing things, often erroneously believing that bad adult behavior is their fault. And that was probably a big moment for them. I just hope they didn't hear or notice the boos. :-(
