Libya Says It Has Captured Qaddafi’s Son Seif al-Islam

Libya’s transitional government said Saturday that its fighters in the southern desert had captured Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafi, the last fugitive son and one-time heir apparent of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

In a scene of celebration outstripped only by news of Colonel Qaddafi’s capture and death last month, Tripoli’s streets erupted into revelry. Vehicles clogged intersections, horns blaring, and militiamen shot their rifles into the sky.

Officials in the capital promised that the son would be closely guarded so he could face trial. But in a troubling echo of Colonel Qaddafi’s capture a month ago, in which he was killed while in the hands of militiamen without ever reaching the capital, the local militias who announced Seif al-Islam’s capture on Saturday suggested they would be the brokers of his fate, at least for now.

1. I hope he lives to stand trial but that he has to live in terror
as to what might happen to him in the hands of hte militia is also justice, he now experiences what he and his despicable family inflicted on countless Libyans.

2. I'm hoping he gets better treatment
than what his father's regime inflicted upon his political enemies. That's one of the distinctions between barbarism and civilization - the ability to mete out justice without introducing the element of vengeance. The eyes of the world are on Libya and the government that is still in a state of flux, and their treatment of Kadafhi's would-be heirs will go a long way toward shaping the world's perception of how they will govern.

3. Judge the man not the tribe
In the first official announcement of Saif al-Islam's capture, Abdurrahim El-Keib said he hoped it would "turn the page on the phase of
revolution and will mark the beginning of the building of a state of freedom, law, justice and transparency.

"I want to assure our people and all nations of the world that Saif and those with him will be given a fair trial, with the guarantees of local and international law - those legal processes which our own people were deprived of," he told a news conference in the Western mountain town of Zintan, where Saif al-Islam and several bodyguards had been taken."

"We are not the sons of militias or gangs but writers of freedom, and we will treat Saif well."

-----------

The NTC wanted Gaddafi alive. Judging the NTC by the actions of a few, is like judging the ANC by the necklacers.

It is great to be able to preach and judge.

It is evener greater to assign blame only to those who are guilty, and not to those who wished otherwise.

4. As it should be
Despite all that Kadafhi had done to his people and all the terrorism he helped foment in his heyday, I regretted the violent end to which he came. I wanted him to stand trial, get called to account for his crimes, and serve his sentence instead of being torn apart like a pack of jackals' prey.

liked to look him in the face and ask him why.

I grew up in a country where the native people were called barbaric, monkeys, packs of jackals, etc - and it pissed me off because I knew the vast majority of them were not. I dislike broad brushing.

7. Please understand that I was not trying to characterize the Libyan people as 'jackals'
I understand that Kadafhi's violent demise occurred at the hands of a few fighters who were caught up in the moment and that their actions do not represent the vast majority of the Libyan people.
