Bank Transfer Day: North Jersey FCU Reports ‘Lines of People’
Fourteen new members have joined the $197 million North Jersey Federal Credit Union within the last hour, the cooperative said.

“There are lines of people and this is just one branch,” said Zoraya Lee-Hamlin, the credit union’s marketing and media consultant. “We’re expecting more.”

In addition to welcoming new members, North Jersey FCU plans to offer free credit scores and credit counseling, educational resources, the opportunity to apply for loans and $25 to those who open a checking account with a minimum balance of $600 or take out a loan.

New personal or auto loan applications submitted today will also qualify for a two month “skip a payment” option every year for the duration of the loan, according to the credit union. Refinance loan applications will be considered for outstanding loans issued by other financial institutions. The credit union is also having an iPad giveaway.

North Jersey FCU serves more than 30,000 members.

3. I went to the credit union and opened an account. There were no long lines though.
I asked the lady if there had been any bank transfer day people and she said a couple. I can't close out my m&t account today, but I set up my credit union account and will move direct deposit over tonight. I get $50 from them if I deposit $50 and set up direct deposit by the end of the year. COOL!! no fees and no balance requirements for checking or savings (i opened savings too... only needed $1). first 150 checks are free.

8. i am not sure. Someone on here did tell me m&t was involved with deutche bank
but for me I have liked the idea of a member credit union where they give dividends to us. My husband has had an account there and has gotten dividends. M&t had a 5.95 checking fee if you didn't have direct deposit which has recently been increased to $10/mo. At the credit union there is no fee for checking and there is no minimum requirement either. I have also have M&t play games with me before regarding when they take money out. It seemed they always managed to do it in a way that incurred the most NSF fees. Granted, if I overdraft it's my fault, but if they did it in the order they were done, then I would have had one and they managed to get three. I did go in and complain and they took one off, but still. I haven't had any nsf fees for some time as I haven't accepted the overdraft thing and also I am very careful about my money.

10. Sadly, my credit union requires 500.00 balance at all times
250.00 in checking
250.00 in mandatory savings
PLUS
15.00 for a book of checks.
and the credit union is 90 minute drive from my house.

whilst my local community bank has FREE checking, cheap checks, and is down the street.

hmmm.....sigh.
Goodnews is we are not with any regional or TBTF banks.

14. That's odd for a CU
Go to your community bank and/or find another CU or ask them why.
