6. Antartica is roughly 1.3 times the size of Europe
This 5th largest continent is centered asymmetrically around the South Pole.
Antarctica has no permanent residents, but a number of governments maintain permanent manned research stations throughout the continent.
The Gentoo Penguin calls Antarctica home and is recognized by the wide white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of its head.
The Madrid Protocol bans all mining in Antarctica, designating the continent as a ‘natural reserve devoted to peace and science’.
