Man, there's some sucky people in Oakland. All seemingly rich or in authority or following authority. Let's hope this cleans up your city, good folks working for change!

Edit/Update: William Zantzinger, they're saying on teh interwebz...innocent until proven guilty...thanks to DUer "C" for the linkage:

had accidentally hit the Benz with a sign, you KNOW his or her ass would be in jail right now.

The link says someone reported the guy was in a pool of blood (or bloody) -- AND THEY LET THE FUCKING DRIVER GO!

They were both alive -- but any updates?

10. In my experience you generally don't arrest a driver after an accident
unless it was an intentional act of assault/attempted murder or the person is under the influence.

so let's all calm down.

On a sidenote, anything more symbolic that a Mercedes hitting a 99% Rally-er?

doesn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt he hit the gas to INTEND to strike the person. and after hitting him he back up striking another. Now, if he hit the gas and hit him again, then we can talk

15. It would be a Mercedes.
If I had to predict who would lose their cool and hit an OWS protester on purpose, I would imagine it would be somebody who's rich and drives a Mercedes. Not saying all Mercedes drivers, or even all rich folks, are bad like this creep.. But you can't make this stuff up. I hope that poor hurt guy is okay. There's a lot of blood.

We're looking at a hit & run and attempted vehicular manslaughter, me thinks. A felony for sure. That is some serious time behind bars.

29. William Zantzinger is a name from 50 years ago
Immortalized by Dylan in "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll." So if they're saying it on the Interwebz, it's by way of comparison and not identification.

William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger
At a Baltimore hotel society gath’rin’
And the cops were called in and his weapon took from him
As they rode him in custody down to the station
And booked William Zanzinger for first-degree murder
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears
Take the rag away from your face
Now ain’t the time for your tears

William Zanzinger, who at twenty-four years
Owns a tobacco farm of six hundred acres
With rich wealthy parents who provide and protect him
And high office relations in the politics of Maryland
Reacted to his deed with a shrug of his shoulders
And swear words and sneering, and his tongue it was snarling
In a matter of minutes on bail was out walking
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears
Take the rag away from your face
Now ain’t the time for your tears

http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-zantzinger10-2009jan10,0,4825718.story

January 10, 2009

He thrust a racial profanity at Carroll and struck her with his cane. She served him his bourbon and then stepped away. Hours later, she collapsed and died of a stroke, and William Devereux Zantzinger, at 24, was charged with homicide. Because of several inconclusive factors, including Carroll's already poor health, the charge was reduced to manslaughter.

The court case of Zantzinger, who died Jan. 3 at 69, received national attention at a volatile moment in the civil rights movement. Bob Dylan immortalized Zantzinger and Carroll in a protest song about race and class, “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” which appeared on the folk singer's 1964 album "The Times They Are A-Changin'." . . .

Outside his circle of friends, Zantzinger did not like to draw attention. But he did in 1991 when he was indicted for collecting more than $64,000 in rent on properties he had not owned for more than five years. He lost the homes, described as rural shacks in the county's Patuxent Woods subdivision, because of failure to pay taxes. Nevertheless, Zantzinger continued to collect rent -- suing some when they did not pay and evicting others. He also raised the rent on the properties. The homes were located off a dirt road and lacked indoor plumbing. . . .

He spent his later years working in relative quiet as a foreclosure auctioneer. . . . Perhaps predictably, Zantzinger was no fan of the Dylan song or its composer, whom he called a "no-account" who had distorted the facts of the original case. He told Dylan biographer Howard Sounes, "I should have sued him and put him in jail."

36. This reminds me of the scene in "Michael Clayton".
Edited on Thu Nov-03-11 01:26 AM by pacalo
For those who haven't seen it, George Clooney's character is an attorney who serves as a "fixer" for a high-scale law firm. The scene establishes George Clooney's role with a middle-of-the-night frantic call from a wealthy guy, with all the excess luxury possessions, who has just committed a hit & run while under the influence. Clooney had to drop everything & go to the client's home to advise him & make the client's world alright again.

That picture speaks volumes about the driver's attitude. Arms up, elbows out, cellphone propped up on his left shoulder, & look at the expression on his face. I see arrogance & smugness that would lead him to believe he could have his attorney fix it & make it go away. I don't see a clue that he's sorry & worried about those he hit.

47. The Clayton scene was a re-do of a scene from Bonfire of the Vanities
Now that is appropo. I am speaking of the book, not the movie, which I have never seen, but would have to include the killing of an innocent in the middle of the night by the wealthy protaganist and his attempts to cover it up as I recall.

Irony upon irony
