20. Really? Your sense of history is incredibly narrow.
I'll retract that assertion if you can tell me what strike this image is from and how many people the police killed.

Not trying to rain on your hero worship or on the protestors dedication or on the historical nature of this moment in time.

But as with all things: This too shall pass. And in 40 years or in 80 years when another cycle of protests crops up (as they do) those people will act like they invented protests and resistance movements too.

39. Presumably Not
... the Police Strike, although the picture looks like it was taken around 1919. I have to admit you've stymied me as to this particular strike, if it occurred in Boston. Looks a little too late for the Lawrence Textile strike, which presumably spilled over into Boston.

You do notice, by the way, that the strikers are armed and actively fighting the police? Very typical of early 20th Century "labor disputes" in the US. I hope it doesn't come to that 100 years later, but I'm not too optimistic.

I would like to know what the image is from. An IWW strike, maybe? Possibly connected with Sacco and Vanzetti?

53. "This too shall pass" .... ??? Don't think so --
Edited on Tue Oct-11-11 01:44 PM by defendandprotect
Elites/corporations have given us more than 50 years of out in the open political

violence in order to reach this point --

plus stolen elections and a Goebbels' style press --

This few hundred year experiement with capitalis/elitism has given us Global Warming

and almost complete poisoning of the environment - air, water, soil.

Glacier melting is creating increasing earthquakes -- and more severe earthquakes.

We are suffering droughts/floods, cyclones, tornadoes, hurricanes of increasing number

and severity. And no one can say how all of this will compound.

As Arctic ice continues to melt ... "it dilutes the salt content of the North Atlantic.

That change in salinity, in turn, could slow or stop the movement of a major Atlantic

Ocean Current whose warmth has kept the climate of northern North America and Northern

Europe hospitable to civilization.

If it failed -- the result would be rapid deep freeze and that would basically make

much of the Northern Hemisphere incapable of supporting societies."

In 2003 we had this report --

"Entire eco system of the North Sea is in a state of collapse - with devastating

implications for fisheries and wild life."

"Record sea temperatures are killing off the plankton on which all life in the sea

depends because they underpin the entire marine food chain. Fish stocks and sea bird

populations have slumped."

Ironically, even Paul O'Neill, former CEO/Alcoa -- from within the W. Bush administration

called Global Warming the equal of a "nuclear holocaust" --

We need to be working to shut down the 100+ nuclear reactors across America and the many more

globally -- it may make the difference between "a whimper or a bang" -- !!

This is a renewal of the Youth Revolution begun in the 1960's --

And it's not going away anymore than the first one did -- *

In 2004 -- we had 37 million Americans living in poverty -- 12.7% of the population

In 2011 -- we have 66 million Americans living in pvoerty -- 20% of the population

This is another Depression -- as engineered as the first one was --

This is predatory capitalism refusing to be held accountable for the damage they have done --

and they aren't going to quit any time soon.

Otoh, I had to look up you pic to find that it was the 1934 Minneapolis Teamster Strike --

and not much info on actual number dead -- saw a minimum of 4 with 65 injured but could

have been 65 killed?

It's not like this is taught in our schools -- or you'll hear about it on Jeopardy --

our Goebbels' style press is limited to celebrity and distractions -- any useful info is

kept at bay!

:hi:

74. My main disagreement is
that they have not taken advantage of the one topic most Americans could agree with them on: corruption. Instead, it is now about evil capitalism, wealthy people, animal rights, the environment, torture, the death penalty, distribution of wealth, education etc... Adding all of that stuff automatically cuts their support at least by half.

And the damage control to try and convince people that it IS only about corruption does not hold water anymore. I watch the livestreams, I read the forums and I follow the websites, OWS is clearly about a political agenda.

75. Well ofcourse they have a political agenda. But corruption is a big part of it
Hundreds of thousands of people are coming together to protest the current system, so obviously you will never find one single issue that everyone is for. This is a diverse group.

But the main theme of these protests is that corruption, because of wall street and the influence it has, has reached an all time high. If you don't see that and instead you see this as an attack on wealthy people then you aren't watching the same protests I am. This has nothing to do with wealthy people. This has to do with those people that take their wealth and end up buying our government with it in an effort to make themselves even richer while the rest of the country (the bottom 90% or so) get poorer.

Capitalism the way it is set up in this country and in many countries around the world is part of the corruption problem, because in the enviroment that we have set up in capitalism most corporations only have one goal, to make their shareholders as rich as possible. And in the process how many people they screw over has no meaning for them.

If you are wealthy good for you, nobody wants to hang you for it. But you should pay your fair share and you should not be able to buy our political system.

77. That political agenda that you acknowledge
is one of the reasons there are not tens of MILLIONS of people supporting them. Instead of tens of millions of progressives, democrats, republicans and conservatives marching arm in arm against corruption, there are thousands of progressives marching for a progressive agenda that has not yet been accepted at the ballot box.

If some people are illegally taking their wealth and buying government, then there needs to be government investigations into that so the problem can be fixed.
Tens of millions of Americans make up the shareholders you mention and that is why all Wall Street will do is work around these protests. The ONLY entity that can help end the corruption is government. Protesting government inaction is what these people should be doing and they should be doing that in DC and every other government office in the nation. They should also concentrate on corruption and leave the pet political issues for another tiime.

FWIW: I am far far from being wealthy and I understand this is not all about wealthy people. I would be more than happy with going back to the Clinton levels or even a little more, and hopefully in 2012, the people will give President Obama the support he needs to do just that.

78. It's extremely naive to believe that the way our government is bought is illegal
the problem is that it is actually perfectly legal. And Obama, in his 2 years, has done nothing to change that. He went as far as to have his administration meet with lobbyists outside the white house gates in an effort not to disclose those meetings. Absolutely nothing illegal about that, and that is the problem.

Anytime you get hundreds of thousands of people together they will hold political view points, to expect otherwise is extremely unfair and disingenuous. But again, if you aren't seeing this as an anti-corruption protest then you aren't paying attention to the same protests I am.

Also, I would guess that if one of the media organizations actually took a scientific poll of who supports these protests and who doesn't you would find that tens of millions of people do in fact support these protests. And the fact that anyone here, such as yourself, doesn't is beyond me.

79. Believing Wall Street will
voluntarily make their legal actions illegal, is what's naive. Wall Street cares about the investors, not what the protesters and their signs say. They will not dip into their investors profits just to satisfy a few thousand protesters. They will not regulate themselves to a negative result. The ONLY thing they might fear is that DC adds more regulations for them to abide by.
IF this is an anti-corruption protest, the ONLY answer to fixing that corruption is in DC.

I am paying very close attention to the protests and that's why I can say it's a political protest and not an anti-corruption protest.

The number of who supports these protests depends solely on what questions are asked.

I do not support the protests because their target is wrong. I do not support the protests because I do not agree with their opinions of what is wrong. I do not support the protests because I believe it should be about corruption, not their blatant progressive agenda. I do not support the protests because, despite their wishful thinking, they do not represent 99% of the people.

80. Wall street is an extension of DC at this point
targetting one is just like targetting the other. And my assumption is that if these protestors were to target DC in general which would include the Obama administration you would have a problem with that as well. Please tell me if I'm mistaken.

34. Actually, the police (or most of them) are solidly working class. I'll
grant you that, at least at the beginning of this struggle, you may seem them acting as enforcers and goons for the ruling class. But once the police are on our side, it'll be game over for the ruling class.

The struggle has only just begun and Wall Street and Boston were its opening skirmishes. To the barricades, friends!

the conversation from Dem vs. Repuke to 99% (working class) vs. 1% (ruling class) offer the possibility to bring the police over to the side of the working class.

As I wrote above, the battle is joined and it's time to choose up sides and man the barricades. Aux armes, citoyens.

Who is the real enemy? Keep it clear in your mind who we are really up against.

I feel sorry for cops who have to do the dirty work of The Enemy for a living. It's a job y'know. Yes a few are rightwing goons (Bolognas) who just like to whip up on people, but they are the minority.

Yes, I stick by "we." What have we as a nation become? We are living in a tyranny imposed by the corporate 1%.

If we choose to continue to be ruled by these white collar criminals who exploit and abuse us, remains to be seen...

but remember the guy who went to an Obama event with a GUN strapped to his leg? Ever see the teabaggers getting treated this way? No, it's only against us - those who have figured out what's up with Wall Street and the super rich screwing us. So we speak up - make our presence known. But it looks like they've decided to take the "punch the hippie" strategy literally. FUCK THEM. This will only inspire us to fight harder. We either hold our ground here - or become corporate minimum wage slaves. I'm so glad people are finally fighting back. I hope people don't let the intimidation tactics by the pigs stop them from fighting back.

All the killers, thieves, child molesters, rapists and banksters in Boston can sleep peacefully tonight!

The Boston cops are too busy breakin kids skulls cause they had the unmitigated gall to actually use their RIGHT of free speech and assembly to protest the wall street bankers coup that is destroying our country!!:grr:

46. So is this when the democratic party steps in to defend OWS?
Veterans thrown to the ground, kids being dragged off the streets in violation of their constitutional rights, got those comfortable shoes on yet???

Now? Is it now? Hey how many congressman and Senators were their to witness this fascist action?

To busy counting all that wall street cash in your pockets, eh pols?:puke:

Oh I get it! They are waiting for some innocent kid or maybe a Vet to get shot down in the street like a dog by some trigger happy teabagger in uniform first, right!?

RIGHT!?

60. Why are peaceful people now always arrested by being tossed to the ground, knee in the throat?

The same way the police seem to have forgotten how to knock. Minor suspected pot dealer, and its boots through the door, full military assault.

Unnecessary force has become commonplace.

Wonder how many white-collar fraudsters are put face down? Necessary for a spindly college kid with a sign though, eh?

Not knocking all the cops in the world. But we have silently accepted treating everyone, everywhere, like a ticking time bomb. It's cowardly and bizarre.

63. The Billionaires for Bush Group should have cheered on the police
It would have been great if the Billionaires for Bush satirical group would have showed up in their limo and tuxes and cheered on the arrests.

I listened to an interview with a Vets for Peace organizer. They specifically went to the site because they heard the police were about to make arrests. They linked arm and arm to protect the younger protesters. A bunch of the vets were beated repeatedly. They said the beat cops were very friendly, but then the riot police were sent in.

But, it sure shows the state of affairs in Boston, MA.

Shame on the money that must be behind this and the administration that accepts this lubrication up their ass.

73. I just wanted to send out a big THANK YOU to all the police in all the states
such as in Massachusetts, New York and even Seattle. We couldn't have done it without you! Your overbearing, outrageous, behavior has guaranteed this nascent movement the growth it must have to really make a difference.

We probably couldn't have done it without you, Officer Friendly, or as your fathers were called, piggy, piggy, oink, oink.

Thanks to you, this is gonna make the WTO Seattle shindig pale by comparison!

:sarcasm:
