McKeon threatens to kill defense bill over same-sex weddings
The leading House Republican on defense issues has threatened to kill passage of annual defense policy legislation if it lacks language blocking military chaplains from performing same-sex weddings.

House Armed Services Committee Chair Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) said Friday in a taped interview on C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” that he’d rather see no version of the fiscal year 2012 defense authorization bill passed at all rather one that doesn’t prevent chaplains from marrying gay couples, according to the The Hill newspaper.

“This was one of the concerns that we had – that we were rushing this, to eliminate this, before we had fully prepared things, and DOMA is the law of the land,” McKeon said, referencing the Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law prohibiting federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

Last week, the Pentagon issued guidance allowing chaplains to perform same-sex weddings, if they so choose, and allowing the use of base facilities for these ceremonies.

20. This is the part of negotiation that Democrats don't seem to get.
Sometimes, when the other side bluffs, you need to
call then on their bluff rather than simply folding
your position.

*NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY* as bargaining statement,
no Republican is going to defund the military; it
would be the kiss of death for them politically.
So the correct response to this sort of blustery
bullshit is "OK, go ahead."

7. Lord almighty if that isn't a gay porn star's name .....
..... Buck McKeon. See Buck McKeon in the upcoming movie, "Men's Work Out."

ATTN: Buck McKeon as a straight guy I can tell you the following .... if you don't want to have sex w/ a
man you don't have to and if you don't want to marry a man you do not have to.

Buck you better look out because to a gay man you are a hot piece of man meat. :sarcasm:

8. Call his bluuff.
If he wants to derail the defense budget process because he's a homophobe, he'll be outed as an extortionist who puts his personal agenda before the country's security. I see no upside for him to draw this line in the sand. P,lenty of downside for his party, though.

9. Let him make sure there's enough money to bring the troops home
Then he can kill any military bill he likes. We'll save 13 billion a month - more than enough to get a few teachers back on the job and take care of other business back home.

To bad we can't sink the DEA's budget the same way.

14. Maybe "Chaplains must perform same-sex weddings"
should be included in all future defense policy bills. That would reduce the deficit in no time.

16. You can tell how extreme the GOP has gotten by this one statement
Before...oh, I don't know, 2007 maybe...the Republicans would have voted against Ronald Reagan's birthday card before they voted against the Defense Authorization Act. (This is in very large part why it's so fucking bloated--because the Defense Authorization Act ALWAYS passes, they put so much pork in it they may as well call it a pepperoni.) Now? They'll filibuster it over something like this.

If the Democratic Party wanted to really do something bold, we should call his bluff.

This clown wants to hold up bills of shit like that, meanwhile nothing is getting done regarding jobs creation. That's sure going to go over well with the general public, eh? Go for it, asshole. Kill three birds with one stone: The wars, your party's House majority, and your Congressional career.
