I heard NOTHING that would help me find a good job that has the ability to pay for health care. By the time I'm RE-TRAINED, I'll still be discriminated by age as I am now. It's great for the young physically/mentally fit young adult and child; not so good for that Protected Class of over 40, closer to 65. NOTHING!

15. And for crying out loud, do people expect him to address EVERY problem?
The speech was what, 45 minutes? Is he going to lay out specific help for any and every disadvantaged worker group? A rising tide lifts all boats.

18. MineralMan I agree with you..As I said before I have been
one of the Presidents biggest critics and I like this speech. I think Obama was talking medicare reform..which could mean several thing but not necessarily cutting medicare..
GREAT SPEECH

20. Thanks. No specifics have ever been mentioned.
Fraud elimination, which has actually started, as the arrests this week have demonstrated, plus elimination of Medicare programs that don't do the job, like Advantage Plus plans, will go a long way toward major savings. Obama has never mentioned cuts in benefits. "Changes" can mean many different things.

30. I'm with you guys -- Old, and willing to discuss ways to make SS, Medicare better for everyone.

If the economy does not improve and the young start feeling more positive about their future, we'll spend our remaining decades living in one crappy society. It's going to take some tweaking to improve things.

If we just keep bitching about everything, I'm going to throw my support behind the first candidate who has a chance to enact euthanasia for all (who want it).

29. "..already on SS and Medicare." = got yours, screw us?
The people who are 50-65 and not collecting got screwed by Reagan in the 1980s, but at least we had time to make alternate plans. Now is not the time to tweak the benefits of those over 50.

6. Your only chance for getting any kind of health care
is to get this President reelected along with as many Dems as possible.

If you do that, we'll get a solid Medicare as well as close to universal health care.

17. Nowhere near universal health care..
Near universal health insurance perhaps, but that's not remotely the same thing as near universal health care.

12. You didn't listen to the speech very well..Just how did he throw
seniors under the bus?...I have probably been one of the Presidents biggest critics and i just didn't hear that..Now ..as far as training for Seniors?..I of course don't know what your occupation is but he proposed (and they have this in several states now) that a program whereas one can collect unemployment while training for another job or upgrade training for current job...
Just didn't hear anything about screwing the boomers... The only thing he said that could affect Seniors and it was nothing to do about Social Security but about medicare system and reform.

go. I'm 66. I'm already on Medicare. Boomers span a pretty wide range of ages.

28. True. I am a boomer and I am not old enough yet to apply for Social Security or Medicare.
I have boomer siblings younger than myself who (of course) are not yet eligible to be on Social Security or Medicare.

Most Boomers are just beginning to go on SS and Medicare.
There is a whole generation of boomers who are not yet eligible or ready to apply...

The first boomer in this country did not even apply for Social Security until the end of 2007!!

26. Not all of us! I'm a young boomer. I just made the stupid cut-off point
of the age they pulled out of thin air, 55 years old. I am 56 and have 9 years to go. Sounds like my brother who is 2 years younger is pretty much screwed though.

between 162 - 172 million people in the next 2 decades will shift away from for profit healthcare toward nonprofit gvt programs. That's a serious SERIOUS cash cow for the profiteers!

24. We "near boomers" are Generation X
Thanks in advance for using that term in the future. :)

We've always known we'd get screwed out of SS/Medicare, but I'll admit that I'm surprised it's happening to the boomers, too. I never dreamed this B.S. would be happening as soon as it is. :(
