Please exercise caution this week during the 9/11 anniversary
Edited on Sun Sep-04-11 10:19 PM by NightWatcher
No, I'm not advocating you be careful of brown men in turbans, but I ask you be careful when consuming the "news" and all of their jingoistic "let's roll" attitude.

Think what you will of what exactly happened ten years ago, but be careful if what is being sold this week to you in the name of "remembrance" and make sure it's not a rewrite of what happened.

Peace and be careful.

Dave

1. Yes, the media is really winding itself up for an extravagant orgy of narcissism.

3. To combat this

I watched the Pat Tillman documentary the other day. The last thing I'm doing anytime soon is mindlessly waving a goddamn flag.

I love my country...just like I love my dog who shits on the floor. He's totally not perfect and Im not gonna say he is, but we'll keep working with him until he's a satisfactory member of our family.

5. In fairness ...
... perhaps your dog only shits on the floor to keep jingoistic assholes away.

Just saying, it might be a good thing.

4. Maybe I need to tighten my tinfoil hat, but be careful as well with others
There are people who will be spoiling for a fight this week. Don't give it to them. Take a deep breath, or ten. Walk away. They are looking for an excuse.

There also may be people in your life that lived through September 11 in NYC, DC, or PA. I've already had more than one conversation with East Coast friends about PTSD, trouble sleeping because of news coverage now, etcetera. A card or a phone call might mean a lot.

IMHO, YMMV.

... whatever the fuck that looks like.

7. Our former neighbor threatened us days after 9/11
The cops got involved.

If you live in a red area, or have Tea Party/Republican neighbors or co-workers, it might be a good time to lay low this week.

Of course, IMHO, YMMV.

10. Me too.
I'm hoping to be welcoming my new nephew into the world. If not, I'll be working on 19th century history and listening to classical music, with several beers thrown in for good measure.
