4. OMG, I have family near Wakefield, Mass.

Glad that nobody was hurt, and I say a little levity is just fine.

My friend in DC joked that some pictures were "askew" on her walls.

Lighten. up. DU.

5. what a hoot

This is the actual damage to an actual high school at the epicenter

You think the HS is quite safe right now?

This nuclear plant has an EMERGENCY SCRAM and is STILL running on diesel generators.

That is city hall... in Mineral VA

I am sure the owner of that Chimney is laughing it up as well.

I think I made the point. Estimated damage is at about 100 million dollars right now.

But yep, we can laugh...

If anything, given wall collapses, cathedral buttresses and others, it is lucky nobody got seriously hurt or killed, but yep, let's laugh.

7. Thanks for the photos.
We realize that it wasn't major like other places get but it not only shook the ground it shook our sense of safety. We aren't used to this kind of thing. Up in the mountains where I am hurricanes aren't really a problem, tornadoes aren't really a problem, floods are few and far between and usually not major like we see on tv and earthquakes go completely un-felt and unnoticed. I am past 50 and have never, ever, experienced what I did today and that's true for lots of people here and was commented on by a number of people when interviewed by our local news.

10. I understand, I live in quake country
but I understand the fear, the panic, it was thirty seconds that felt like forever.

If you have not done such, tomorrow morning check house for cracks... if you find them, make sure it is checked. Some are cosmetic some are structural.

If you have another one, under a sturdy table or the frame of a door.

If you smell gas, close your inlet, and get out, or just plain out get out and either way call the gas company.

Keep a pair of sturdy shoes by bed and a flashlight for a while by your bed.

Boil water for a few days until the water system is cleared, or buy bottled water.

And yes, it will pass and you will have after shocks. They come with the territory.

If there is anything like the ones I posted near where you live, avoid them until they are cleared by engineers, if they have damage the most minor of shakes can bring them down.

19. Nadin's advice about the shoes is one people don't always think of, but very, very important
along with the flashlight. If you get a shaker strong enough to do serious damage you are likely to have a lot of glass and other debris to walk through/over.

Good list, Nadin.

13. Not only that, but people out west don't understand just how far
the shock wave travels back east. Wakefield, Mass, which saw damage to at least one chimney, is hundreds of miles from the epicenter.

Still, it doesn't compare to Northridge or any of the other big west coast quakes. However, what it lacked in strength, it made up in area.

14. I do.. the best analogy for people to get it
is....

A quake in the east is like ringing a really big bell...

It is ancient bedrock... among the oldest on the planet. South Africa has a section of ancient bedrock too, actually a little older...

One of the things I got a side interest after the Mexico City quake was... why damage happens?

In fact, a quake in the East Coast could potentially do more damage due to that... than a west coast, more intense quake.

18. I know and part of the reason for the expected damage
even if it is only a seven pointer, is the ring the bell effect...

The last one... changed the course of the Mississippi

22. Not true. Ran backwards in part for a while and created a lake, but the river didn't change course.

24. HEre
from geologic accounts

in the CSM

In 1811 and 1812, the New Madrid fault zone that zig zags through five states shook so violently that it shifted furniture in Washington, D.C., and rang church bells in Boston. The series of temblors changed the course of the Mississippi River near Memphis, and historical accounts claim the river even flowed backward briefly.

20. Look at the wall
there is a small crack, might not be structural but.. until they check they cannot overrule something more than panels.
